Monty Alexander is an amazing jazz pianist from Jamaica and he blends some home grown instruments in his albums. One album I remember offhand is Jamento. Beautiful album with some really nice steel drum work.

I feel you on the cheesy stuff on YouTube, so this one should hit the spot.
