anyone build their own speakers?

i finished the second pipe, now i've finally got a pair. the sound is terrible. very diappointing. i'll guess i'm going to try new drivers in the pipes and stick the 1354 in some hawaii boxes.

that's too bad skipster, I sure hope I have better luck with mine (or just enjoy them more). I might be able to build the second speaker tomorrow, but we'll have to see. I might have to wait till next weekend.

uses vifa tweaters and woofers

its comparable to 2-3k dollar speakers they say
one reviewer said it exceeds those by a great margin

I'm not making anything that's crossed lower than 10kHz for the tweeter or higher than 50kHz for the sub. windband and fullrange from now on for me!

I feel the same way.Full range with not a tweeter but more of a super tweeter and the sub,well a real subwoofer not woofer.I use mine at 60hz and cross to the tweets (linaeum) at 12khz which leaves one single driver to cover the important mid band.

rick, you need a digital camera. we want pics.

i've built a hawaii 5.0 box, and i'm sitting here in astonishment. this little sucker is great considering the price. it was pretty easy to build too. it has me wondering why the 1354 can sound good in this little box, but in my voigt pipe it doesn't. i guess i'll have to work on my voigts some more and give them a second chance.

you are right skip , I am definately slacking in the show and tell department,and sooo much cool stuff to show.I will work on rectifying that soon man.

I have built simple sealed-box and ported-bass-reflex two- and three-way speaker systems in the past, and have a pair of RatSchwack 40-1354A speakers sitting inside small sealed boxes. I will undertake one final speaker-building project -- a voigt-pipe tower system using a pair of RatSchwack 8" full-range drivers (I have a pair of 40-1286C drivers sitting in their original cartons - would the cheaper 40-1271C drivers be better in this design?).

the 1271 has a really high Q (i've read it was over 2!) and in an enclosure Q rises. the 1271 is probably best suited for an open baffle. i might stick some 1286's in a voigtpipe. and since it's the same sizeas the 1286, i guess there's no harm in trying the 1271.

LOL... No wonder why the 1271 in a box sounded so boomy! The 1272 has almost as high of a Q as the 1271 - and its Fs isn't as low as either the 1271 or the 1286! (Blame the really high Q of the 1271 on its really small 3-oz. magnet.) Needless to say, the 1271 is best suited for installation in a false ceiling, without any baffle. But most ceiling installations include baffles, so there are better choices than the 1271's.

And I did listen to my 1286's very briefly, and I wasn't all that impressed with them. You see, there is a depression in the response curve at about 2kHz - in fact, the upper-mids of those 1286's sucked. But maybe I haven't broken-in those drivers enough, so maybe smaller speakers are better for the mids.
