Anybody like Rum?

Sep 7, 2006 at 1:37 AM Post #16 of 49
Back in 1990 or so, I brought back an aged rum from Martinique. I can't remember anything about it except that it was in a black bottle and was really smooth sipping rum. I wouldn't have considered putting anything into it.

I was sure sad when it was gone. These days, I'm mostly drinking the equivalent tequilas. Viva Cuervo Reserva de Familia ($70/bottle at Costco).

Gotta try that. Locally I can get both the Appleton Reserve, and 12 Year Extra. Only a small price difference (Reserve $28CDN, 12 Year $33CDN), so I'll probably jump for the 12 Year. In Jamaica and Canada this Fall, they are also releasing a special Blender's Legacy rum, priced between the 12 Year and hard to find 21 Year.

I had absolutely no idea Pusser's came in two different types (official website has no indication). Thanks for the heads up! I really want to try Pusser's when I head to the US, as it is higher proof (95.5 compared to 84 in Canada), plus in Canada its overpriced at $42CDN.

Quite a few members have recommended this so far. Never heard of it or seen it available in Canada, perhaps one day I could track it down.

Also heard some good things about that one, rather odd since you don't see many good rums come out of anywhere other than the caribbean. I think I need to try a bottle as well hehe...

Thanks for the link back to an older thread. I never found that one so I started this one. Very good discussion and reading in that one.

Wow quite a few people drink Captain Morgan's Private Stock. It certainly has a fancy bottle, but I have been avoiding it since I already have a rather mainstream aged rum (Bacardi 8).

I think the next one I will try will be Havana Club 7 Anos. The fact that it's readily available in Canada and not in the US makes it seem like a sin almost to not try it when I have the opportunity.

Still wondering if anyone has been trying the Cachaca, or specifically Agua Luca. It's only available in some states, and not in Canada.

Rum is what the heathen savages out in the jungles of hippogriffland drink while they dance covered in the blood of their own children around the camp fire to their multiheaded snake god Blootak. It is a vile drink that turns even the most respectable men into complete scoundrels.

Well tailored gentlemen of civilisation prefer a nice gin.

Centenario (Cuban rum añejo) imposible to find here
Havana Club (original from Cuba, not the Puerto Rican one, 7 years) not found in US neither
Bacardi
Flor de Caña
Barcelo (Dominican)
Brugal (Dominican)

Are among the best rums out there...

I love rum. Ive recently discovered that warm rum just in a glass is disturbingly delicious. Either that or straight out of a flask. Captain Morgan of course. Private stock from the Captain is very good and easily taken in shots or sipped. His regular Spiced is also as nice, but more abrasive to some folks. Generally I have it 2 shots of morgan with some ice with a dash of Coca Cola. No Pepsi!@$#

Why is the rum always gone?

In Canada we do have the actual Cuban made Havana Club distributed internationally by Pernod-Ricard.

To anyone out there who doesn't know, if you find Havana Club in the US, it is not the same thing. Most likely it is the new white rum produced by Bacardi in Puerto Rico that they have been able to label Havana Club in the US due to some trademark workaround or something.

Just opened the Cruzan Diamond 5 Year today and gave it a try with a splash of water. Out of all the rums I've had, it was certainly the most surprising on the first sip. It has quite a prominent butter/vanilla flavour. Very smooth. I rather like it and it seems like it was a great deal at $21CDN.

BC Liquor stores have the 750mL bottles for $21CDN. However, as far as dark rums go, I think i would want to try Goslings Black Seal first ($30CDN for 750mL).

Black Seal is one of my go to rums. Myers isn't even close.

My favorite rums are havana club light and dark, however.

One of the largest local purveyors of single malt scotches decided to have a rum tasting about ten years ago. My former hunting partner and I came away from this with an Argentinian rum that comes in a squat bottle in a soft leather pouch. Neither of us can remember the name of the product, but boy was it good! Just neat and warm one of the finest sippers I can recall. I remember the summer morning after my former hunting partner and I had given sanitary disposal to an entire bottle of the stuff out on my screen porch SWMBO found the empty by the sink, picked it up, and back in the rack I heard her say: "Well, Yo ho ho!"

Does it look like this? It is a Venezuelan rum called Pampero Anniversario. It is held in a squat bottle and comes with a leather pouch. It is the only well known rum that I can think of that matches that description.

I wish you good luck in finding it. I'm hoping to snag a bottle whenever I travel to the US.

How could anybody NOT like rum?

I have a huge bottle of Pineapple Rum from Azerbaijan which I cherish. I drink it in small amounts on VERY special occasions. I got it as a gift from a friend who works over there in the peace core - she was unaware that I'm only 20.

Other than that, I'm too poor to afford rum.

Cuban Rum is the best, I have tried, do not hesitate to try the añejo ones, made in Cuba, not by Bacardi in PR, you will be amazed, forget about Captain Morgan and all those syrupy, flavored rums, take a real stuff, from the special Castro reserves done in the former Bacardi tonnels...!!! Here a couple of pics:

Havana Club 7 years añejo,

Or maybe the special reserve 15 years añejo,
