I'm VERY proud of my recent accomplishment. I recently (about 2 hours ago) ran the March of Dimes 5 mile run for premature born babies.

In all seriousness, my GF and her lil sis wanted to go, and I was kinda blindsided by the whole thing, having to wake up at 630, to be there by 8. We thought it started at 8, but it actually started at 9.

Anyhow, I was disgruntled the entire time before the event, not wanting to wake up early on my day off, let alone do this 5 mile walk. It loops throughout downtown and has many hills, as well as going over 2 different bridges.

Anyways, I say screw it, and I'm not in running shoes, but they're "fashion" running shoes. i.e. they're made by Deisel, and not really a "real" running shoe. I was planning on just walking next to my GF, but when it started, I told her I would see her at the end, and decided to run.

I ended up getting 4th or 5th and running it in 38 minutes. Actual placing wasn't of importance (it was for charity, and it wasn't a race), and there were only 2 kids and 1 guy that passed me, and along the way cops were blocking the traffic, when I passed each water/check point I was told I was in 4th, but when I got to the end, at the finish line, I was told I was 6th. Meaning, some people didn't stay on the path (there were parts where you could cut through and chop off a solid 1/4 mile or more), and some didn't even go on the bridges...so I retain I got 4th or 5th because those two kids who passed me know for sure they got 1st and 2nd and told me there wasn't anybody else that they passed that I didn't know about.

Not bad since I never ran that kinda distance before. I've ran like 3k and 5K, but not that far and those races were literally 10 years ago...so I'm pretty proud of my accomplishment, especially since I didn't train or plan on even doing it. Let alone dress for it, lol.

Anybody else have any experiences running? I think I'm going to get back into running because that was like a HUGE accomplishment for me since it wasn't just a flat 5 miles, but with 2 bridges and several inclines.

I run track and cross-country. The longest I've ever run was like 13 miles (for practice). Usually I like to participate in 5K (3 mile) events. Good job on running so well without practice! For me, when I'm out of shape, I can't run well at all.

You've started your training right on time, guatam.

Well done, oicdn, 7min 36sec per mile pace is nothing to be sniffed at. I'd go to a specialist running shop and get fitted for some proper running shoes if you're still interested in running.

^ I think part of it was, which probably played a MAJOR role was the fact that I thought I was only running 4 miles, probably a huge psychological effect there. After I was done, I was told it was a 5 mile trip!!!

I actually got into a groove and was pacing VERY well. What screwed up my pacing was when I was approaching somebody to pass, or when I got passed...my pace got screwed up.

It's been a LONG time since I did that and the mechanics of it all surprisingly came back, I was fairly shocked at how well I was holding up.

I used to be a runner, in high school. Longest run for practice for me was 17 miles. Ran a 4:33 mile at one point. Nothing special. 5k to 10k was my best racing distance.

I used to run XC in high school. I wasn't the fastest, 17:36 5k, but it was good enough for varsity in high school.

The slowest recruit for freshman year at college was around 16:10, so I was no where near fast enough to run in college.
