I have been strongly considering buying the HD700s. I can get a pair of open box ones for $530. I can't quite afford the 800s, and definitely can't afford to adequately power them. I know that the 700s don't receive glowing reviews, but I have heard some good things about them. My main concerns for a headphone are comfort, soundstage, and sound quality. I am coming from the HD600s. So, why should I NOT buy these headphones?

Because what you already have is probably better.

+1 The 700's are my least favorite of all the hd series that I've owned. The hd800's wowed me with their technical abilities but I ended up with the 650 because they are the most musical easy to listen to hp that I've ever owned.

The hd700 was way to harsh and strident on the top end without any punch on the bottom end. IMO

I debated with myself over the same thing.  Even brand new you can get the HD700's for $650 from a couple different very reputable dealers.  The reviews are definitely polar opposites.  People tend to either love or hate them.  In the end I went with something else, but still consider purchasing a pair just to try them out.  It's that damned unknown and curiosity that gets us every time.

My reason to not get the hd 700 would be...

-the audeze lcd2 (for just a little more)
- the hifiman he500
-and like everyone else said, the hd800/650 are more worth it.

Orthos will be quite a pleasant upgrade coming from the hd6xx
