ANY PLAYER - LOOKING FOR BEST SOUND QUALITY

Apr 4, 2007 at 2:47 PM Post #16 of 49
StevenBrouwer,

I didn't use the Samsung YP-Z5 extensively, but to my recollection it's pretty much the best-sounding player I have ever heard. I didn't pay special attention to the vocals but for a portable player its extension, dynamics, balance, and soundstage were nothing less than extraordinary.

The X5 however has responded the best to amplification (as compared to the headphone-outs of various flash players, the line-out of a Zen Vision:M, and the line-out of the iPod 5G with a Sik dock).

How can you tell? Did you use them both? I'm really interested.

Not supporting flac is an issue I sadly can not accept. And do not want to use an amp either.

If you want something based on pure sound quality... smaller than a D2 with a 1 box solution... probably the recommended Meizu (Which i think is the same size as the D2 but maybe a bit thinner?) or maybe the smallest Samsung player.
+1 for the plus sound quality. But if it has to be D2 size then I'll take it D2 size. IS the meizu better than the Meizu?

Really flash players aren't going to have the best sound quality no matter what out of all DAPs.
Could you develop this point please? By flash player, do you mean non HDD player?

Thanks to you all for your help.

My own suggestion is the Samsung T9. I just picked up this player a few days ago, and the sound quality is amazing. I've actually thought about returning it for the upcoming Clix 2 for better video playback, which it seems you don't care about anyway, but the sound quality is so intoxicating that all I need is a minute of listening to fall in love with it again. It's also tiny (but sturdy) and can be converted into a UMS device with a firmware upgrade. Not sure if it does lossless, but it's worth considering.

I highly value your answer, unfortunately, Samsung T9 and Samsung YP-Z5 do not reproduce flac. I would have gone for it... Too bad...
Any other suggestion?

There are many people that address Samsung players like the best. While they actually are good (I've heard the Samsung K3), I'm pretty sure these people have never heard the Kenwood and the iMod mp3 players.

That figures why no one has recommended the iMod, but then again you could run the iMod with a volume control plugged into it.

One question though, FLACs are big files and you're wanting 2GB or so, that would only fit roughly five to six albums. Is that enough for you?

I ve read a lot this forum before making my question.
It seems that Cowon D2 is highly appreciated around here. But it seems rather big to me. I'd rather get the same sound quality in a smaller box without having to pay for a nice screen I won't use.
Are the other Cowon players as good as D2?
Any alternative "beat them all" player already, just, or about to be released (still focusing on sound quality and size)?

Thank you in advance for your help.

not only that, u won't wanna be storing huge FLAC files in a player that does only 2/4GB. what you need is a HDD player. 2 alternatives:

1. hunt down the Cowon X5

2. Rockbox an ipod http://www.rockbox.org/
