Any HD650 owners go back to the HD600?

Last week my HD600's broke, and I just bought a replacement HD650 for them.

The thing is though, I don't think I like them better. I never really noticed the "veil" on the HD600's, but on the HD650 with the much more pronounced base it's immediately evident to me what people are talking about. Also, and maybe as a result of, the treble just seems to be lacking a bit of sparkle that I heard in the HD600's.

This may be a bit hasty as I now have about one hour of listening time on them, but because of the above, I'm really tempted to return them and purchase a set of HD600's again. Anyone else ever feel this way about their pair? Maybe burnin will fix some of these problems?

Are those HD-650 new? If so, you may want to burn them in for a minimum of 200 hours before passing the judgement.

I recently obtained a HD-600 to compare against the HD-650 and I don't see myself liking the former over the latter. In fact the HD-600 seems to produce more bass which is obscuring some details that otherwise come crystal clear on the HD-650. In addition, I do not feel the HD-600 can touch the HD-650 on musicality (and I dare say, technical competence). Give your new cans some time to grow on you.

Cheers!

try removing the foam "veil's" inside the earcup and replace it with some hose

The foam has a purpose, do not remove it.

I replaced mine with a thin sheet of pantyhose. Nice!

But now what is going to cancel those outer ear reflections?

Well I started out with a 650 and eventualy found myself owning 580s.

I did a small coin hole on mine long ago, and the sound didn't change much, but I left it that way and like it. With the full foam it didn't bother me at all though. Did it more out of curiousity, and because the coin hole mods did improve slightly the sound on my Grado SR-60s and Koss KSC-35s.

I, too, prefer (after trying the HD650 several times over several years now) the HD600.

The HD650 is in no way "better," either technically or musically, over the HD600.

Some may, however, like it better, but it's simply a matter of personal taste, a taste for perhaps a heavier sound or more bass/warmth.

I like both, wont sell either. One is more raw, and one is more warming.

I switch back and forth between the 600's and 650's, but reach for the 650's most of the time. I'm keepin' 'em both this time, however!

Technically, it is better, because it has better measurements.
