Any good magazines to subcribe to?

I would say, avoid all those men's magazines like Maxim, Men's Health, Esquire, etc. "Consume, consume, consume" and "conform conform conform" is the only message they send. If you want to become as messed-up, paranoid and self-esteem-free as the poor women who read all those ridiculous women's magazines, have at it. If you want to spend all your income on grooming products, clothing with expensive labels, and "lifestyle" aspiration items, have at it.

IMO, there's nothing in those magazines that can help you, only hurt you... Avoid like the plague...

As a joke, I recently sent a guest subscription of Playboy to an old college pal who recently got married for the first time (he's 43 but with a much younger wife). Oddly enough, he says she reads them more than he does! I need a young wife like that...

when i was a little kid i started reading just the cartoons. then as i grew up pauline kael's movie reviews. then "shouts and murmurs". then the fiction story. then... now i read them cover to cover. i guess it is intellectual, but it has something for everyone.

playboy is ok, but the articles sometimes seem one-sided. the pictorals are nice, though.

i agree 100%. plus "maxim" is one of the most poorly written magazines i've seen, and the pictorals are half-baked playboy ripoffs.

Yeah, I totally agree.

Scrolling down through this thread, I was surprised not to see it until the fourteenth post. Kirosia, you should definitely check out some older issues from the library or something to see if you like it.

I agree, except for Esquire, which I find has intelligent and substantive articles as well as a more sophisticated sense of humor. Oh and there are hot chicks, too. I really think it's a quality magazine. My GF buys it and then gives it to me when she's done.

I was beginning to think that I was the only one who read The Economist! Another good one, if you can find it, is the Harvard Lampoon--some funny stuff in there.

Here are some mags I subscribe to:

Sync...about electronics with chicks and humor thrown in.
Computer Gaming World...title says it all
Dwell...about modern homes
Jane...I know it's a woman's mag, but it is interesting anyway

my friend gets Cargo...if sync is a mix of maxim with tech, then cargo is a mix of GQ and tech.

Pretty neat, pretty good,
mike

"Performance VW"!

(well, that's the only magazine I buy regularly)...

"Stuff" is also quite good...

I like National Geographic too... Tend to only read that in the doctor's waiting room though!

Sports Illustrated has some great pictures and weekly articles.

Road and Track, despite constantly giving good reviews (what magazine doesnt), they have some great photos in every issue and some great short stories too.

National Geographic, again... Great pictures, and really interesting stuff in every issue.

I really used to like Popular science, but it got old quickly. THey seem to cover the same stuff alot.

18 and looking for something to read...

Well, The New Yorker is pretty cool.

I like Tape Op, an independent, low-budget, anti-corporate dirtbag audio recording mag. Free subscriptions are available at their website. I do live concert recording on a simple stereo mic setup into my Nomad Jukebox 3, and even though most of TapeOp was initially irrelevant or over my head, I still find it strangely absorbing. The album reviews and musician interviews are really cool, and as a music consumer it is interesting to get an independent perspective from within the music industry.

Yes, my favorite even though I'm an L.A. guy! And it is dirt cheap if you get a student/educator subscription.

If you fancy some magazines from further afield these are some good UK ones:

Gramophone: THE classical music rag
New Scientist: Weekly roundup of Science
Mojo: Currently the best rock/pop/film review magazine in the UK
