I'm planning to buy a USB DAC for use with linux. I know officially any usb-sound compliant device (which most USB DAC's are, i guess) should work with the standard usb-sound driver, but I can imagine differences in the USB hardware implementations of different DAC's may cause operation to be more, or less smooth. For that matter, experiences on Windows/Mac may be just as relevant. I would appreciate to hear any personal experiences.

I have used several different USB audio devices with Linux and they all have worked just fine. I am currently using Stello DA100S at the office, and I have used at least Total Bithead and Edirol UA-25 in the past.

A Trends UD-10 works just fine here running Debian based Voyage Linux. The trends outputs S/PDIF to a Merdian 518, then to a GDA-700. All bit perfect with different sample rate material and HDCD FLACs.

Yup, linux has generic USB audio drivers like Mac and Windows, so all the devices advertised as no drivers needed or what not should be supported with no problems. It's only the ones that don't use generic drivers that cause problems, but this is only in sound cards like the emu 0404. DACs should all be using standard USB audio, don't quote me on that though, there could be some that don't.

Not sure what that means. I'm a bit new to linux.
I guess one of these is my Chaintech AV-710 and the other the Monica USB.

Those are the sampling rates your USB DACs accept as input. Thanks for the info! I'm also interested in the output for other USB DACs, keep it coming! I don't trust advertised specs (my Terratec Aureon USB MKII supports only 48kHz even though 44.1kHz is advertised as a supported sampling rate).

Anyone care to test the Benchmark DAC1 USB?
Under Windows, setting output depth to 24bit, resampler to 96kHz and using kernel streaming (or ASIO) would help determine if 24bit/96kHz PCM is indeed supported by the device. If not, you'd get an error message in that configuration.

My 2MOVE should have the same input (also uses PCM2702).

Interesting, PICO can only go up to 48000. I reckon USB 1.1 receivers can only go up to 48000.
