Hi,

I have a little bit of a strange question - I’m trying to build a reproduction of a Beyerdynamic M380 microphone. The originals have become incredibly expensive (over $1,000), and are often not in good working condition. Why am I asking about a microphone on a hifi/headphone forum? Well, strangely, these used the 600ohm driver from an ‘80’s/early-‘90’s DT-880 headphone as the microphone capsule (Beyer must have had extras around and was looking for another use for them).

Anyway, 600ohm DT880/990/770s from that era are getting increasingly rare, and I’d rather not cannibalize an existing pair if I don’t have to. So here’s the question - how different are currently-produced 600ohm 880 drivers from the 80s/90s version?

Thanks!

If you setup an eBay alert for them, they do come up with one side working dirt cheap pretty regularly. Consolidated sound services is the Beyerdynamic North America repair and parts supplier. They have the 600 ohm drivers for $58 each.

I saw the Consolidated Sound Services drivers, which was what inspired the question about how different the current drivers are from the “vintage” ones.

not speaking from experience here, but i would guess the modern versions would be more responsive and lighter, most likely contributing to better treble and timbre if used in a microphone

Reduced treble is part of the desired effect. The reason these mics have gone up so much in value is because they’re great on low-frequency sources like kick drum, bass, etc.

There are plenty of other dynamic mics that sound more open/natural, but no other mics that do quite what this one does.
