All I can tell you is based on the 800 mA switchable output voltage unit and the 1500 mA International Radio Shack adapters. I can't tell any difference -- with one exception -- although theoretically the higher the amperage the better the sound should be, esp. the bass. However, 600 mA is the minimum suggested by Sony. The more the merrier.
The 800 mA I have is filtered and regulated, while the 1200 is only regulated. The filtering is excellent -- it cuts out all hum and any noise from other stuff on the circuit (I use it on my desk, to power portables connected to Monsoon desktop speakers, and the Monsoon amp is susceptible to induced powerline hum or noise when other AC adapters are in the circuit -- such as any AC powered portable or my laptop).
Which would sound better, the portable battery adapter adapter (takes 4 AAs) or a regular wallwart? I'm willing to spend around $25 for better quality audio. I don't need a portable energy source, I can use my SlimX for that. I'm wondering which sounds better.
For $5 more you can get the RS 273-1900, you get a variable output voltage wallwart, a variable output voltage portable DC power supply and a battery charger that charges 4 AA Ni-MH batteries. Its on sale now for 50% off for $20. Others have said here that they notice no difference in fidelity between the 660mA 273-1900 and the 273-1770 800 mA for $15 with the Sony D-25S.
I dont know if the RS 273-1900 or the RS 273-1770 is regulated or filtered.
