Got the Akg K1000 and lusting after the HD800. Any recommendations for an amplifier that can drive both of them well? Any suggestion would be appreciated!

I bet you can not go wrong with a 4-board β22.
Mine sing with the K1000, but sadly I have never heard the HD800.

It's starting to look like the Audio-gd Phoenix would be up to the ask. Several people have already stated that it works very well with the HD800. The upcoming Los Angeles area meet this Saturday should give you several impressions (hopefully) of how it works with the K1000 as well.

If it works well with the HD800, then I am getting one too. Would love to get dedicated head amps but economically not justifiable. Any idea if the RWA 30.2 is a contender?

The Signature 30.2 is a speaker amplifier (2 x 30 watt), so unless you build a transformer unit it will be too powerful for the HD800.
It is "perfect" match for the K1000 though.

Thanks Drosera, would definitely appreciate some impressions from this Saturday's meet

I have both the HD-800, and just two days ago got a pair of K-1000's (again). Are you looking at tubes or SS?

Well, you could kind of consolidate. I used my Melos for HP-1000s (the Melos sounds good with almost all headphones) and also as a pre amp for my K-1000 amp. The added benefit was that I could plug in the HP-1000 and it would cut the K-1000 out and vice versa.

I would love to be in your position...congrats on your acquisition. T have no preference actually between ss or tubes....so any recommendations will be considered seriously!

That's a thought! But I would still require a power amp for the K1K right?

Yes, the owner was not super happy to sell, especially after I tested them on a small tube amp I brought along.

If you can get 4 watts out of a tube amp with a 16 ohm tap, you will be very, very happy with the K-1000's. This leads me to believe that a 2A3 amp is the way to go, if you can afford it.

There are quite a few solid state offerings out there, and the guy I bought them from was powering them with a very nice vintage Marantz power amp, but I wasn't super impressed.

I've heard the the WA5 with both K1000s and HD800s and agree.

And with speaker terminals and 10w of SET power, the WA5 is also a good all around choice if you want to drive a pair of high efficiency speakers. Right now I use a pair of Woo Audio 300B mono blocks and a WA2 as a pre-amp for my speaker rig. But I am adding a WA5 to use as a dedciated amp for my AKG K1000s and Grados. Don't know if I will end up with the HD800s or not but I have been kicking the idea around.

Absolutely. The Moth Si2A3 is a dream with either the K-1000 or the HD-800. The problem is finding one. I think there were only 150 or so made and owners don't part with them casually. Me? Cold, dead fingers, people.

However, I'd take a hard look at the Eddie Current ZDT. It's not quite a Zana, since it has transformers on the outputs and the original is OTL. It sounds amazing with the HD-800, but doesn't have enough power for the K-1000.

The ZDT, however, has speaker taps and 8W of power. IIRC, the K-1000's manual specifies 8W or better from a speaker amp. So there you go - run the K-1000 from the speaker taps and plug the HD-800 into the front.
