Whats a good amp that goes well with Etys? Preferably a non-portable amp. Price range: $200 and below. Any suggestions?

I recommend the Porta Corda and the Total Airhead.. If you really prefer NOT to have thie portability, look into the Little and the Corda, both run a bit over 200 bucks, but if you get a 2nd hand unit, the final price should be under the $200 mark.

The MG Head works very well with the Etymotic and a used one may be in your price range (or just save up). Antique Soundlabs also released recently a $200 solid state amplifier that I would be curious about.

Maybe do like me, buy a Porta Corda but ask Jan to bias the opamps into Class A and add a power adapter?

Corda HA-1...kick arse for the price trust me on that.

KurtW compared it to the cosmic with the base station 1 and that combo is helluva lot more expensive.

Porta Corda is darn good too

Otherwise PM JMT

... as I am fond of the one he made for my Etys. Darn cheap and the sound is much too great for what I paid. Highly recommended.

I didn't think the sound of the (stock) Corda had as much in common with the Cosmic as Kurt did. Without making a value judgment about either, I just wouldn't dub them similar.

With the Etymotic, be aware that you have a somewhat revealing headphone. In other words, you're going to hear more of what that amp sounds like than with other headphones.

The $200 range is kind of an odd place to be. Significantly below that, you can get DIY amps by JMT and the like that are great for the price. At slightly above, you have the Little and the Corda to consider. Right at $200, you're looking mostly at used Grado RA-1s (which in my understanding is almost identical to a well made DIY CMOY) and the Creek (which IMO, is not a worthwhile amp--at least not with its standard power supply).

If we've convinced you to spend a little more, consider this--
the Little is a darker, smooth amp that doesn't quite have the extension of the Corda and has Headroom's version of crossfeed filtering - the Corda has Meier's version of crossfeed and is overall, a very impressive amp but its detail may not be to your liking since its less smooth. I'm still a fan of the Corda, myself. I use it mostly "transportable" in that I throw it in my bag and take it to work, mostly for use with Etymotic and a Panasonic CT570.

Wow, all that opinion and I'm still a newbie.

Thanx for the suggestions ppl...

Anyways, I've noticed that my budget calls for more of a portable amp so at this moment I'm either deciding on the Total Airhead 4.5v or a JMT amp...

what do guys recommend?

Portable amp suggestion: JMT.

He can build a CHA-47 or CMOY to your exact specifications. Works extremely well for most folks. You can try searching this site for "JMT and amp and Etymotic" to get an idea of what folks impressions are from this setup.

My $0.02: JMT built CHA-47 works very nicely with ER4P/S. Outstanding sound plus easily transportable. Perfect for my needs and finances. Plus, Jon is a pleasure to work with.

Or, if you're handy with a soldering iron, make an amp yourself! There are several options that you could consider... check out HeadWize for info: http://headwize.com/projects/index.htm

After some reconsideration, I'm bumping up my price range to around $300-400 give or take some... probably give but watever. I'm either considering the Corda HA-1 or a MG Head...

Right now, I'm leaning towards the Corda HA-1 cuz I want something relatively small and lightweight in case I want move it around.

What do you ppl think... also any other suggestions for my new price range?
