Hey guys,

was thinking of finally getting a headphone amp for my AKG 701s. I have been hearing good things about the combination of the 701 and the Meier Cantate. Any feedback and other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I do not need a portable amp, just one for my home [preferable one with USB port for computer connectivity].

Unless you specifically want a SS amp, hybrid/tubes sound very good with the accuracy of the 701s. Take the component upgrades in the power supply if you can budget it. Bigger caps mean bigger impact.

I like my akg 701 with the Compass amp/dac. Nice clean clear mids with some puncy percussion and dynamics. Fun and involving soundstage. Check out the compass thread, there is a comparison between the opera and the compass and the compass does pretty well.

The Cantate is a pretty safe choice.
The reason why this thread hasn't got too many replies is because this question is asked a few times every week and the answer can be found if you search the database.

I really appreciate the feedback guys. Read up a bit on the compass and I like what I see there. I figure I'll have to make a tough decision between that and the cantate, and again thanks for your help.

Agree with Happy Camper about hybrids with the 701. I know it was voiced for Senn 600s, but the hybrid Head Direct EF-1 with the right 12AU7 sounds amazing with the 701. Many here have said that. I use an RCA Cleartop and it is fine.

Graham Slee Solo if you want to inject more life into them.
