Hello,

I need amp for my k701 (aroung 250 $).

I use iRiver h120; micro DAC Headroom; also I use supermicro IV and Headamp AE-1. is this 2 amp enough for k701, or I cann buy something better for this money?

Thanks

SM IV = probably no, my friend sold his setup (SMIV & K701), because the amp isn't enough to power K701 to its potential.

AE-1, don't know - but AE-2 should be able to drive any headphone up to 600 ohm.

AE-2 PORTABLE HEADPHONE AMP

The HeadAmp AE-2 is our new portable headphone amp. The AE-2 has the ability to drive just about any headphone in the world, from 16 to 600 ohm impedance.

Quoted from HeadAmp - Audio Electronics
So I assume, this portable amp, capable to drive almost all headphone (beside K1000).

^Second that.

Just got mine. Even though it's using stock tubes and is not fully burned in yet, I love it and so do my AKGs.

I am using my K701 with Meyer's HeadFive (similar to Arietta). This gives a warmer and fuller presentation than coming straight from the CD player. Been looking at the Heed Canamp as an upgrade though - the K701 keeps improving as you throw more power behind it.

You might want to skip Heed if you wanted bigger leap in upgrade, seek higher level amp

Argh.

Do not confuse impedance with sensitivity. Impedance measures electrical resistance.

Sensitivity tells you how loud a headphone will get with a certain amount of power.

The output impedance of an amp does NOT tell you how well it will do with all headphones. You have to figure both the impedance of the amp and the headphones to find how well the output power will drive the headphones.

And portable amps are generally not so good for full-sized headphones. They just don't have the power, no matter what the marketing says. If they did, they would have a battery like the one in your car.

Buy a desktop amp. There are many good ones to choose from.
