Beta Band - Three E.P's

The Three EPs is a compilation of The Beta Band's first three releases, consisting of the EPs Champion Versions, The Patty Patty Sound and Los Amigos del Beta Bandidos. The cover art shows the 3 main images from those EPs.

In 2000 Q magazine placed The Three EPs at number 74 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever.

Clutch by Clutch

This is no longer my favorite album by the band, but it is what got me back into hard stuff again. I got old, mellowed out, then I had a roomie that played this album alot and fell in love with it. Been rockin out ever since and hard rock is back in my routine. It's throaty, great drums, and ****y. Great lyric rythm. It sounds evil but the lyrics are far far from it. A very fun album. Great band and great to see live.

The Fall - The Infotainment Scan
Great 90s Fall album, strung out halfway between techno and rock. Covers include impressive versions of Sister Sledge's Lost In Music and Lee Perry's Why Are People Grudgeful, but the originals are just as good. Who can say no to a song with a title like Paranoia Man in Cheap S##t Room?

On the heavier side I really like the mid 90s version of Girls Against Boys. GVSB. Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby seems like it should be high on any best of the 90s list. Man, I love this album. I don't know if they did a better album than this. I used to like House of GVSB better, and I do still love it, but Venus is just relentless from the opening "In Like Flynn" to the end. So come down to my level. I can't talk to you. It's like you're in like Flynn........

Still love that funk on House of GVSB, but this is the one I now use to clear the cobwebs out of my head. "Rockets Are Red" and "Bulletproof Cupid" ... Everybody wanna live that sexy ride

But House of GVSB has "Disco Six Six Six" and "Super-fire" and "Click Click" and "TheKindaMzkYouLike" and a bunch of others with lots of twin bass, heavy, crank-it-up appeal that makes everything seem ... oh ... so ... cool ... and ... kinda ... sleazy

A great Jazz album that has the all to rare combination of accessiblity to non jazz heads
yet still appealing to those who are fans of the genre. Its hard to believe that this is over
forty years, seems timeless to me. If your just getting into Jazz buy this one after
kind of blue if your into Jazz you probably got this one already.

A Blue note 1964 lp release recently remastered for cd.

Immune - 1/f


A modern rock record that is actually progressive (take note Dream Theater!) This album shifts in mood and dynamics, sprawling with odd time signatures and a great sense of melody. Feels like a single work rather than a collection of songs. Highly recommended.

For fans of Tool / Dredg / Massive Attack

Excellent choice, this is really the album where Clutch found their voice. Up until that point, they were a heavy but somewhat stiff, sort of Helmet-like hardcore band with a sense of humor, but with CLUTCH they really loosened up and finally found their groove. It rocks, but it jams too. One of my all-time favorites.

Greg Koch - The Grip!

Greg Koch is one helluva guitar player. Sure, axe slingers seem to be a dime a dozen these days. He has great tone and a wonderful sense of style and flaire. The Grip! features a lineup of tunes drawn from several genres. Some of the tracks have very interesting titles and/or themes. Take the opening track, Zoiks, for instance. If you're thinking Shaggy from the Scooby Doo cartoons then you got it right.

It's certainly a worthwhile listen for any fan of instrumental rock, blues, or the electric guitar.

Arto Lindsay - Noon Chill / Prize

A pair of my favorite albums of the last few years, with Prize he moved to Ani DiFranco's little Righteous Babe Records label which may (or may not) be the reason it sounds pretty fine too, and has great production (like most of her albums). Actually, they both sound very nice, but Prize just seems to have more impact. I think he spent most of his youth growing up in Brazil so has a strong appreciation of Tropicalia and Bossa-Nova type music. On his last few albums he has used those musical roots coupled with his sense of exploration to craft some soothing, but at the same time very interesting and playfully experimental, bossa-nova music, somewhat reminiscent of Beck's exploration on the Mutations album. Think maybe Caetano Veloso with some drum 'n' bass rhythms added and played by a very tight jazz band. I have Noon Chill from 1998 and Prize from 1999 and one or two others that came later, but those first two are my favorites. Noon Chill has a more dreamy and droney feel while Prize is more upbeat, but both spend a lot of time in my player. Lindsay is somewhat well known as a music pioneer from his days in DNA and The Golden Palominos, as well as later in The Ambitious Lovers.

But if I had to pick only one, Noon Chill would be it.

Mika - Life in Cartoon Motion

I bought this for my GF, thinking it would not be for me, but it is a fun, playful album that is great cruising music. He has a great voice and plays homage to Freddie Mercury. It was a surprise of an album for me.

Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral

What else can be said about this album. One of the great albums of the 90s, and it's a concept album to boot! Hell, it's one of the best of all time in my book.

Any idea where I can find this album? With a recommendation like that I have to hear it. I've checked Amazon and have come up with nothing.

Edit: Thanks Squeek. When I ran a search for Immune, all I got were books on the immune system. Guess I didn't go far enough back. CD has been ordered.
