Am I so bad in identifying sound quality?

I cleaned my ears, inserted them better, and got used to them.

I think the EX600 is also pretty comfortable to wear (except I am not a fan of the sticking-out look). This IEM definitely has its charm - very refined and clear details and bass. I was initially little bothered by the harshness at highs, but it is now tolerable as I notice that may have something to do with the recording quality and the low bitrate MP3's I had before. I am now mostly listening to the 320 kbps. Some good IEM's are less forgiving low quality MP3's, and the EX600 is one of them.

One of the good things about the IEM's is that you switch to a different pair of tips you got different sound. It's amazing.

My experience is you don't want air-tight seal nor loose seal. The seal should be appropriate to provide comfort and allow some air flow. A WRONG seal can't do justice to the quality IEM's. That's why the OEM's provide so many pairs of tips - not only for your comfort also for your finding the best sound.

Buying the quality IEM's is only the first step. The 2nd step is to find that MAGIC seal.

I would think that it's all about "breaking-in". You won't get used to an IEM until after using it for a few days or maybe even weeks or months. After that, it could sound from bad, to the best thing ever.

USUALLY burn-in improves the sound.
Rarely, if anything have I hear something get worse with burn-in/time

Generally, you probably won't like the sound signature or the overall presentation of the earphones, not enough bass, too bright etc etc
When you get them out the box though: usually they mostly start out as muddy sounding or too harsh/bright/sibilant

Not necessarily. I could never get accustomed to the Sibilance the EX1000s put out. I mean I gave those things several chances and wanted to hear them as other did. I must admit there were a few times when the song wasn't sibilant and I got a taste of what they were capable of. But to be limited to a certain few tracks for enjoyment is a joke.

Yeah it takes a little while for me to appreciate the sound brought by the EX600 because it has a distinct sound signature considering I had only listened to the buds before that. For the IE80, it is right on because I pretty much knew what I expected.

I am glad I bought the EX600 first. If I bought the IE80, I probably would just settle down with it (because this was what I was looking for at that time) and never experience another sound signature like the EX600. They bring to me different sound for the music enjoyment. The IE80 brings the sound which is powerful, heavy, ocean-like, solid, hurricane windy, yet the EX600 brings the sound which is sexy, refined, crystal-clear, breezing. For vocal, the EX600 suits female while the IE80 suits male. Of course, this is only my experience.

I finally ordered the Yamaha EPH-100 ($115 from J&R) instead of the FTX90 for my son. Both IEM's are receiving good reviews from this community, but I went for the 100 primarily due to warranty concern. I also like the looks of the EPH100. Now my only concern is whether the sound isolation will endanger my son's safety when he has these walking outside.

The Denon d2000 should be in tomorrow if not today and the EPH100 will be in on Friday. Will keep you posted what I think of these over the weekend.

Hope you enjoy the denons. I think they will also raise your expectations in audio performance = a more empty wallet lol.

I trusted your guys for the recommendation.

The denon is for my son and personally I can't stand the cans for more than 30 mins. As for my wallet, you can't empty an emptied wallet. Seriously I am done with the toys and all I need to do is to just enjoy the music with them. I am a heavy listener with an average 10hrs of music on a weekly day.

I said the same thing and progressively gotten worse lol. Word of warning, run while you still can (joke) :).

Looking forward to tax return though so I can save up for my Custom IEM.

You couldn't have put that more right :)
Ocean like for the ie8/80's and refined, crystal clear for ex600's

This is the impression i got with the ie7/8's and the ex500/700's

Btw, did you return the ex600's or did u keep them?

From his impressions I am sure he will be keeping those crystal gems of his. I also have to agree with him on finding more than one preferred sound signature. I have 4 so far. My modded Denon 5000s actually remind me of the EX1000 but without such a harsh treble spike, the FX700 for is amazing timbre (realism), deep bass, and extended & detailed treble. And my favorite the IE80s for its sultry and silky smooth treble and deep bass. The silver cable brings more detail in the treble, making them just a tad more aggressive, bass is a little tighter, mid range is more forward. An amazing pairing with the Studio V I must say :). The TF10s are great in their own right and are very good at Dubstep and female vocals. They have a large sound stage for a BA and deep bass. They pretty much don't remind me of a BA at all. Really looking forward to how my Custom TF10s turn out...

I have a bottom line and that line has been reached. LOL. I am not a guy who wants to get into the world of the amps and cables. Enough is enough.

I'll put this way. The music from the IE80 is deep into your soul while from the EX600 it is entertaining your mind.

I can't return (bought it from ebay and got a new replacement from Sony) and won't return the EX600. It will stay as long as it wants.
