I have had the great pleasure of listening to the CAL.1H for the last 10 or so months. At this point, I am pretty convinced you have to spend a lot more money to meaningfully better this headphone. The pros are the the price, overall timbre, a beautiful mid range, and punchy detailed bass, and while the treble is a little rolled off it sounds right in the mix. The cons are the weight (although it is well distributed) and a slight treble graininess common to dynamic headphones especially under a kilobuck.
Rather than talk about the headphone in general, I thought I would do some posts comparing the CAL.1h to couple of more expensive, but well-known headphones, on a particular track. Part of the reason for this is that I happen to have an HD800S and a Stax SR007 laying around, those are the survivors after some decades in the hobby. The HD800S and the Altiat are getting music fed by a P2AES->Gungnir Multibit (A1) -> Icon Audio HP8 mk2. The SR007 is the same chain but into an SRX+ amp.
So today the track is the Beatles Come Together from the recent Hi-Res Abbey Road Super Deluxe Edition
Without critical listening the CAL.1H render a completely coherent presentation of the music. Digging a bit deeper, here are my notes: The soundstage, while mostly in the head, reasonably rendered, instrumental layering is well done and there is a bit of depth to the soundstage. Paul's bass, which is the important instrument in this song, is punchy and goes deep. Their isn't any significant bleed into the mids, it's fully satisfying. Lennon's voice floats perfectly above, detail and the snare drums have a satisfyingly sharp attack. The cymbals however, if you listen carefully, have a hair of graininess. I find that only when you get above a kilobuck, and even then not always, do you find headphones do this completely right.
The HD800S throws a wider soundstage, which you already know. The bass while super articulate, is much drier and doesn't hit with same authority as the Altiat. While the HD800S has a beautiful midrange, the over all presentation is still a little more on the thin side, which for rock is perhaps less satisfying than the Altiat. The treble, while bright is more finely rendered on the HD800S.
The SR007 is a much more intimate listen. The soundstage is narrower. The bass is warm and deep, but it doesn't hit like the dynamic Altiat. The liquid mids of the SR007 are spectacular. And the treble is more refined than the altiat. However, on the total package, I can say that the punch of the Altiat and the width of the soundstage are perhaps create a better overall sense of the abbey road experience.
I think rock music is a strength of the altiat and although the technicalities on the HD800S and SR007 in different ways are overall superior, there is some secret sauce happening in the altiat.
