I think it is to just charge the walkman. I cannot confirm that yet as I don't have my A-816 with me to test it yet.(Ken has it right now.) The litature that came with it indicates that it is a true line out.(It has an attenuation switch as it is designed for car accessories.) I should be able to confirm that later today.

Thanks for all the info! =)

Actually when I look at the stock USB cable, there are only a few pins (just enough for data transfer and charging, I presume). Are there any alternatives with all the pins included?

Been searching the web and bumped into this japanese site.

Kinda messy, but there are some useful info. The translation didn't help (can't read Japanese). Haha... I've tried nifty and excite jp

Here's an extract :

The headphone stops at the line - out.

The cable for the recording is connected from 09pin with 01 and 22pin(GND) through resistance Rx=220kΩ.
The voltage of 09pin seems to change when this resistance is changed, and to distinguish the kind of the port by this.

It seems to be judged that the port is connected when 08pin and 10pin are short-circuited.

Input of 5V of power supply
To cannot the start of the charge after 07pin+11pin:USB connection is displayed and the operation
Only 07pin: It charges it by 90mA that can be operated. The charge ends automatically

Anyone can make any sense out of the "Rx.. 220K... 100k..." part?

Here's some pics I've gathered from there :

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

PS : at post 238, it was mentioned :
"A clear sound seems to be emitted somewhat compared with the headphone output (In my ER-4S&ATH-W1000 + ear).
The white noise decreases, too.
The beep sound doesn't occur.
The quality of the sound seems to be better than that of taking from the earphone terminal."
So this is good news for the hiss we hear from the headphone out.

Ok does this mean that the Sony doesn't really have a true line out?

Because I'm dieing to use it with an amp...which I have never done in my life with a dap.

It has a line out but, it is locked and requires it to be plugged into a power source for the line out to work.(AFIK the Zune has a similar deal with its line out) As it stands Ken is working on finding a way to make a lod that will work on the A8XX/A6XX units.(Getting around the having it plugged in part.)

Thank You very much Mr. Tadashi, man I hope something can be figured out...I'd love to buy the tiniest amp I could find and use it with my Sony 616. It would be a new experience for me.

thanks basman. i'm actually very close in getting one. but i have yet to read all the threads regarding this dap. without the lod ken is hopefully going to make, i don't think i'll every go back to using a mini-mini cable. not only is a lod beats a mini-mini cable in terms of sound quality, but i think it would also add a "wow" factor to the over-all look of a portable rig.

i'll wait for a few more days. don't want to buy a mini-mini cable then shift to an lod if it does come out. my wallet will surely kick my #$!
