I've had my alien DAC for a while, but now my ears are hungry. Then I remembered, the output levels for my DAC are really low: I have to turn up the volume to like 80% in windows whereas for any soundcard I've used a similar output can be had at ~15%.
 
Is this normal? It sounds alright, but I'm wondering maybe this is why it only sounds alright, not great compared to my onboard.

Nevermind found it in the build thread... after some pages. Guess I'm gonna try cap-rolling soon.

Not sure what info you've found.  You should be setting windows volume to 100% to prevent losing resolution from the digital volume control.  Control volume on your amp, not in windows.
