I just got a brand new k872. Night and day compared to 812. 872 is nasal and congested very forward sounding. 812 is airy with huge soundstage. Very disappointed with the sound of 872. Everything bad said about it turned out to be true. Sending it back

You gotta take out the foam rings that are behind the pads. I got both too, I much preferred refer the K812s but the K872s are excellent when I get background noises.

What DAC and AMP are you using with K812/K872?
Also, what exactly are you referring to when you say it sounds "nasal"?

Sorry to hear that. But you have to give them time especially you got them brand new. I recently got the K812 second hand and I really like them. From my understanding both versions open and closed need at least 200 hour for breaking. If you can try and and let them play for a week non stop and see if there is any sound changes afterwards.
As mentioned above I really like my K812 that I got used so I wasn't sure what to expect. Quality bass. huge realistic soundstage and my favourite apart for the comfort is the micro details. Just like a good electrostatic headphone you can hear so much more.

Yes, I also was hugely disappointed with the K872. The K812 is way better in terms of anything - sound, comfort (not so hot), design (those plastic cups of the K872 look cheap).

The amp is moon 230. Nasal is elevated upper midrange. Everything sounds like through the tube
Actually upper mid range is attenuated - that is what I hear at least, and also what frequency response curve is showing 🤔
Anyhow, K872 is always provoking extreme reactions...you either praise it or hate it, nothing in between.
Also, K872 depends a lot on amp. For instance, Violectric v222 is pretty similar sounding to the Violectric v200 (v222 is based on v200 design at least), however K872 hooked to those two yields completely different sound. K872 with v200 is pretty much a failure, some upper treble starts peaking too much out of proportion while timbre got some lean/shrill character. However, with v222 it is a pure perfection. I could never see it coming - none of other headphones I tried emphasized so much difference between those two amps. Moreover, K701 and K712 I prefer more from v200, HD650 is better from v222 (especially ballanced), but all the differences are rather very small...except with K872. If I would have only v200, I would also classify K872 as a failure most likely.
I am prone to conclude K872 requires technically polished source with sharp delineation of the notes, fast transients, no too much warmth/bloom.
