AKG N40

For balanced it's better to shop from a different manufacturer because of the connectors FiiO uses.
Perhaps something like the LINSOUL LSC09 (currently also on (Mass)Drop on sale).

True, the connector housing is just a hair too thick. If it was a mm less.... no problem.

I am thinking about buying the cable and filing a mm off, now.
Could be enough, it's close:

It's just touches the housing as you can see.

Ahh, that's OK. I would just file the edge/corner off the cable with an emery board.

Is the cable nice and neutral sounding? I saw some Fiio IEMs that reviewed really well, and was thinking they must have their cable sorted.

I would not want to make the N40 any warmer, or brighter anyway.

I knew I'd seen a Fiio IEM somewhere, and I found it. It does look like it uses this type of cable, or very similar. Fiio FH5.

(Spent ages looking. Was hoping to get a clue about the cable sound signature. I found it eventually, in a magazine I have. …………. Amazon.com reviews of this cable suggest it bring out detail. I hope it doesn't mean it's bright. There was one grumble though, that the cable causes static electricity and you can hear it in the IEM. Reviews are on this Amazon UK page, but are all from Amazon.com. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07GGZC...LC&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it#customerReviews)

@GreenBow
I only had the cable on the N40 for minutes. After discovering that the connection was under strain I only used the cable on my UE 900.
On that I didn't notice a difference with the original cable.

I've seen some Meze Audio products in the past. No experience with their cables though.

Does the AKG N40 need a complete seal to sound good?
I want something that doesn't need a complete seal to sound good.
I also want it to be wireless and be able to activate Google assistant on an android phone.

All IEM's need a complete seal to sound at their best. If I see your wishlist > buy a wireless (ANC) headphone.
I recently aquired the Sony WH-1000XM3. Great headphone for on the go!

Some IEM requires full seal and some don't.
I have IEM that only sounds good when the seal is about 100% and some i have don't require a complete seal.

My brother has the WH-1000XM3. They are ace :)
But i need IEM so i can always have one side plugged out of the ear when i drive my electric scooter for safety.
It will be like that 95% of the time.

If an IEM does not seal the bass is diminished, maybe some are ok without full seal. I don't gonna argue on that.

In that case the N40 could be fine but you need a extra mmcx Bluetooth cable to make it wireless.
Maybe the Shure SE215? Dynamic driver, cheaper, more bass to compensate for the broken seal en mmcx connectors.
