I think the K271 Studio is a better all around headphone and it is closed, which is a huge benifit. Click on the akg link in my signature to read more about what I think about it. Oh, and I just happen to have one for sale.

mysticaldodo, the HD650 is less smooth than the HD595, it is like "crisp/bright on demand". The HD595 can sometimes be a bit 'forgiving' in this sense. The HD650 is smooth in the more desireable way to me -- I predict that you would love it

For the most part it seems that everyone here on the forums prefers the K501, except for philodox

. I'll look into the ones you have for sale, thanks for mentioning. Now, I had a quick question about the 501s, Does everyone feel like they are the best for both male and female voices? I have a lot of Vocal Trance that is more like jazz with some killer vocals. Would this sound good on the 501s? Another quick question about the headband, It automatically adjusts to the size of your head??! That's freekin cool!

My wallet will hate you for saying that

The 501 fares better with male vocals compared to the 595. I prefer the 595 for female vocals. I like warmth and colouration with female vocals. Male vocals sound a teeny bit grainy with 595 but still nice unless you listen to Billie Corgan

Shucks, most vocal trance is woman singers, Drats I'm trying to convince myself that I "need" the K501s. LOL

Having never heard the K501, I wouldn't have expected it being so good as some describe it in the midrange with vocals and woodwinds.

It may be just a prejudice coming from an old review in an Italian magazine ("Suono"), where it was said to sound a bit cold and not so rounded with vocals, as well as with violins that were felt as a bit dry sounding and not rich enough in timbre.

Be it prejudice or anything, I know I love the sennheiser warmth & lushness !

I agree, It could be just "Hubbub" But its got me interested enough to at least try them out. Ever since I got my Grado's I've rarely put my 595s on my head, unless my ears get too damn tired from there Great :::chuckles:::: comfortability.

Haha don't they scare you sometimes on the Senn's? When I first got them I listened to ambient stuff with a lot of weird non- natural sounding (screams) what they sounded like, and it scared the crap outta me. K501s seem to be quite eligant too, as they seem they rival my 595s comfort possibility and looks as well.

Hey, I never said the K271S was better sounding... just that it is a better all around headphone.

Tha K501 has a lot of good things going for it, but its weaknesses are also more pronounced than the K271S' and it is an open headphone which means that it is only good for home use.

Point taking, I wasn't pointing a finger at your Philodox, just a noteworthy comment

I was wondering if those of you who have or have had the K501 could mention what amps you are using it with or have liked it with?

Thanks.

I've used it with only one amp my modded and tube rolled XCan (dedicated PSU on the way!!!). It sounds great to me with jazz and classical but I need to turn the volume half way. With my other phones, I only need to go slightly more then a 1/4.

I did tried 501 with a CMoy but

. But it was better then I've expected

Since 501 is not easy to drive, the Senn HD 650 will probably be a bitch to drive???

lol no.

The HD650 is a bit less efficient than the 50 ohm HD595, but still an efficient phone. The only "concern" here is the high impedance -- but only with a 9V battery powered cmoy or the like.
