As long as there isnt too much outside noise, the volume for the Aiwa is ok with the MX-400.
If there's too much outside noise, the volume is really insufficient and will probably frustrate you to no end.
It's hard to recommend an earbud/ear canal type phone without some sort of price limit involved or I'd recommend the Shure E1/E2/E5 or Etymotics ER4-P or ER-6.
You could always go with the Sony E-888 if those are out of budget.
