Im new on the forum and i currently looking for a high end Discman, i found two options but i dont know what to do. Perhaps some could advice me.

-On one hand i have a sony D555 with original DC adaptor and leather case but it doesnt work, the player spin the disk but does not read TOC (i guess it the famous faulty gear but im not sure)

-On the other i have a fully serviced sony D303 in perfectly working order but no accesories only a non original DC adaptor.

Aesthetically both are a 9/10.

im afraid that the D555 could have something more brooken., since the D303 could be a secure purchase.

The price is 350 euros plus shipping for the D555 and 325 euros for the D303.

I would skip the Sony D555 (bad pcb) and go with the Sony D303.

This is sort of an obsolete topic. The "D" versions of the Sony portable CD players were once popular because of their discrete components in the DAC section. It made them enviable sources in the days before DACs became plentiful. There's really no reason to pursue them anymore, when most smartphones have a better quality output these days, much less stand-alone DACs and the like.

I would skip the Sony D555 (bad pcb) and go with the Sony D303.

Yeah and the 303 is a trusted seller i bought him a D6C serviced and in perfect condition it almost looked like it was from the 80s.
Also i read the D555 also can have faulty laser and gear.

The thing is im looking for a more retro thing more like the best of the first generation of discmans im currently building sort of a mini hifi set from vintaje portables

I like these guys. I've bought a couple on eBay to use as digital transports since they have optical/toslink outputs in addition analog line out. I doubt anyone would consider them collectibles, but as CD transports they are a splendid bargain.
