«Matched power dissipation» sounds as good as «constant current coupling» and the like as well as your formula... but still makes no sense. The only valid recommendation would be to simply try different resistor values if you have the urge to change something on the sound of your headphones, especially if you find the bass too thin. But don't expect wonders! And it only works with a few headphones.

In another thread I found info that both Ety's ER4P and ER4S contain resistors in series, 22 and 100 ohm respectively, which clearly means that headphone manufacturers don't care at all for the damping factor that amps could provide.

That's true -- and my objections have nothing to do with the damping factor.

That's OK but it still makes more sense to start around equal power division than start anywhere. Many people with poor electrical knowledge would use a 10 ohm resistor for 300 ohm and then realise it doesn't work. On the other hand you could find people trying a couple of hundred ohm resistor with 24 ohm headphones and then assuming it made the sound bass heavy and silent, giving no advantage instead. BTW, it's neither constant current nor constant voltage drive, as long as the resistance has a limited value.

O.k. -- Never mind!
