OK this should work, I have tried it on a raw image of my userdata (userdata.img) and converted it to sparse format, and flashed back and it worked.
I tested on userdata as this is far easier to recover than system so I have not tested this on system.




The new fastboot compatible sparse format of system.img (called system-fastboot.img) here:

flash with:
fastboot flash system system-fastboot.img

So we are on the same page, here is my ADB folder containing fastboot.exe so we are using the same version:

The AR Music Music Player Pro won't appear in that system image, I removed it as it attempts to install each boot as a user app anyway.

p.s. now would be a good time to enable developer options, USB debugging and connect via ADB and tick the box to allways allow authorisation for you computer. Not as essential now that we can recover but good practice.
