Along the same lines, David Grisman put out 2 albums Tone Poems and Tone Poems 2 with Tony Rice and Martin Taylor respectively. Both are excellent albums.

He also put out a number of albums with Jerry Garcia. My favorites are What If (jazz covers) and Shady Grove (old time folk).

Leaving out Tony Trischka was an oversight on my part. I left out Bush and Grisman just because I don't like their music all that much, though Grisman was undoubtedly an important innovator.

Shady Grove is a classic album, though it's definitely more "old-timey" and I wouldn't suggest it to someone who was looking for really impressive playing. Not that the playing is bad, it's just fairly straightforward.

Friday Night in San Francisco

This album is truly amazing. The best live album I've heard.

Although it is not completely solo (4 or 5 songs are solo piano by Neil Young), I'd add Neil Young : Live at Massey Hall to the list

Most of the songs are on Harvest or future albums

just picked up Fates last night, thanks for the tip, definitely Michael Hedges influenced but very talented.

Perfect type of transient acoustic stuff for my RS-1s!
