Jazz / Funk / Fusion / Acid;

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um, The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
Donald Byrd - Blackbyrd, Places and Spaces
Grover Washington Jr. - Mister Magic, Feels So Good
Herbie Hancock - HeadHunters
MMW (Medeski, Martin and Wood) - Last Chance to Dance Perhaps (a compilation album but a good place to start)
Bela Fleck and The Flecktones - Greatest Hits of the 20th Century (another compilation / starting point)
Pat Metheny Group - The Way Up

Rock / Pop

I second the Astral Weeks, Grace, OK computer, The bends, Brothers In Arms, The Beatles, PinkFloyd, Sigur Ros, albums mentioned.
Paul Simon - Graceland
Silverchair - Frogstomp
Weezer - The blue album
Pearl Jam - Ten
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magic
Guns N Roses - Use your illusions, Lies, Welcome to the Jungle
Metallica - And Justice for all..., The black album
John Mayer Trio - Try!
Damien Rice - O, 9
Dave Matthews Band - Crash, Before these Crowded streets, Under the table and dreaming, Live at Luther College (acoustic bliss)

Hip Hop

Aesop Rock - Labour Days, Appleseed
People Under the Stairs - O.S.T., The Next Step, ... Or stay tuned

Classical

A good starting point would be;
"The most relaxing Classical Album in the World ... Ever!" 2 disks, good recordings.

Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos - particularly 2 and 3

Bach's Goldberg Variations - Glenn Gould

If you want to try some Jazzed up Classical check out Jacques Loussier playing bach, satie, etc.

I could go on and I'm sure I'm missing some obvious ones but I think you have enough to get you started.
If I repeated anyone elses recommendations it's cause the album deserves it!

Enjoy!

Start with either Dire Straits Live at the BBC or Burning Water: Live n' Lit....two of the most dynamic, involving, grooving, moving recordings I own.

Both are RARE small club live recordings that sound great on cheap gear...and only improve as the quality of your rig increases.

Close your eyes and you'll think you're there...

Is this list from some alternate universe that I am not allowed to visit?

If not, I guess I clearly need to expand my horizons!

Blasphemy. That list was from no universe other than the universal universe of awesome. You've got some record stores to visit, mister.

Gotta put in a vote for my '07 favorite, Arcade Fire's Neon Bible.

The Beatles's catalogue is a must. Collect them all.

As for "The Greatest X of All Time" lists in music mags, they have a tendency to rank more recent works/artists more highly partly because they're fresher in memory. Even so, they're a good place to start.

i just listened to jack johnson's brushfire fairy tales and in between dreams while i drove back to davis... very awesome! are there any female versions of jack johnson!?

also picked up pink floyd's animals, and also some porcupine tree. also took arcade fire's neon bible too. time for more listening!

it would help me a bunch that if you suggest more than 10 artist(s), that you highlight maybe 2-3 so i can have a "priority" list going on =D

thanks again! i'm sure this is helping a lot of other people discover new music just as i am!
