(Sigh!) Heard the bad news this afternoon. Vocally, Abbey Lincoln was the closest thing contemporary jazz fans had to Billie Holiday. Unlike Billie, however, Abbey was always in control of her own image and career. She walked away from a career as a bombshell in the '50s to become an outspoken champion of civil rights (alongside former husband Max Roach) and as the millennium approached had ascended to the status of jazz's premier singer-songwriter. We'll miss you, Abbey…RIP…

Her song "bird alone" with Stan Getz has been the first song on my ipod for a number of years. I've always loved the song and the emotion and feel she puts into every song. An amazing voice I can only hope she went with peace.
