HD600s, 5 months past warranty, blown transducer. $157.50 plus shipping to repair!!! Perhaps the "world's best headphone" should have a longer warranty, especially with those repair prices...

These are the first pay of >$50 headphones that I've owned that have broken, and to call ownership a disappointing experience is an understatement. Does anyone know if Senn has a trade in program? Perhaps the functional transducer which is evidently worth $140 or so could be used as credit towards some other purchase.

Wow, you can get a brand-new pair of HD580's for less than that.

EDIT: Sorry, £46, around $70-80

I thought it was $80 as well, but the Senn Service person told me it was $140 for the transducer plus $17.50 for the labor. (Though incidentally a $97 repair cost for premium quality phones 5 months past warrant is also fairly unpalatable...)

Great suggestion, and good to know, but I bought them from a German retailer.

I guess they make them to a lesser standard for the home market?

Woops but there's a correction I would like to make:

Not all authorised retailers in the US qualify for the extended warranty programme. This is a list of those who are eligible:

But back to the original topic; I've ordered a pair of HD600 so I'm very interested in this thread. I agree that a $140 repair bill is crazy, a HD580 could be purchased for that price!

Sennheiser gives everybody the 5 years. According to this site, the only requirement is registration:

http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser...roduktgarantie

"Nur wenn Sie sich registrieren, haben sie Anspruch auf die verlängerte
Garantiezeit von insgesamt 5 Jahren für Ihr Produkt.
Selbstverständlich werden Ihre Daten von uns nicht an Dritte weitergegeben."

Thanks for the translation Kurt! The English version of that URL states "Registration Product warranty (for selected Aviation products only)" though, and the pulldown menu does not list any HD600 as an option. Do the 600s have another name in the German market and are they considered an aviation product?

thanks for your help,

Nope, I can definately say that the HD600s are not considered "aviation" headphones. For a start, pilots (yep, I have a pilot's licence) don't use headphones they use headsets which allow dual communication.

EDIT: At least not whilst flying the plane, anyways...

Hmm, was to fast for that one, sorry. On the product page they state the HD 600 have 2 year warranty.

Are most of Sennheiser's "HIGH-END" headphones like this?

HD580
HD590
HD595
HD600
HD650

Or is it just a rare/specific case?

Aren't 580's usually grouped with 600's? Like 580/600? How different are they? If they arent that different...a new HD580 would be more practical.

the going rate of 600s here on head-fi seems to be $160 w/ shipping plus or minus a few bucks. Don't know if that helps you or not.

From what I've read, the 580 is basically a 600 with plastic grilles on the earcups rather than the metal ones that the 600/650 use. The 580 supposedly sounds almost exactly like the 600, and a lot of people have listened to both and cannot tell a difference. If there is one, I highly doubt it warrants the increased price. But, to each his own...

the 580s and 600s are very similar, with the 580s using slightly less snazzy materials. The 590 was the planned replacement to the 580, but was not very popular, so it is now out of the line of succession, though still available.

the 595s are the new high end "upfront" design which has replaced the 590 and maybe one day the 580s if enough people like their sound and buy a lot of them.

The 650s are the new "top of the line" Senn phones, and appear to be regarded as legitimate replacements. Though "replacement" is an odd word, as the top end Senns never really go away.

Thanks all for the suggestions on the 580s. I have written to Senn complaining about the whole sad situation and will see what they say.
