What is the deal with it being consider femanine or [insert another word] for men to drink white wine? I can hang with people insulting Chardonnay, because well I don't like it, but where did the stigma come from? I mean, no one will give a guy crap for eating 'green' grapes? So why is it so bad to drink white wine now and then?

I am definately a wine novice, but I have been drinking the stuff 'educationally' as well as recreationally for a couple years now, but I was just wondering where that stigma came from.

As we speak I am enjoying my third glass of a somewhat cheap, but very tasty bottle of Sauvignon Blanc (Concannon 2003, Livermore CA). This stuff is great. I also really enjoy Pinot Grigio and even some Rieslings. I definately dig red wine, especially Pinot Noir, Tempranillo (Spanish Grape), and some blends like Cabernet/Merlot...but recently have found that I really enjoy myself a good glass (well usually a couple) of white wine. Though as stated previously I have never had a Chardonnay that I liked, and I HATE champagne (I know, it is sparkling wine, so it is different).

Ya know what goes well together, some Sauvignon Blanc and Thelonious Monk (Specifically 'Bye-Ya', on Monk's Dream).

Any comments, either flamming or productive (though a good flame is something to enjoy) are welcome.

Ya my girlfriend is happy, I am happy. I was just curious if anyone had actually thought why white wine has that stigma...like the origin.

Don't sweat it. Just drink what you like and don't bother with what other people think.

I've always enjoyed reds more, but I do like a few whites. There's a nice fume blanc by Ferrari Carrano, really enjoy gerwurztraminers (try some from the Willamette valley- it's not only pinot up there), and a good ice wine is something special.

Recreationally I think it's quite lame for anyone to drink white wine. But if you want to enjoy a very nice dish of fish or sea food, you have to accompany it with some really good white wine, whether you are male or female. And there are excellent white wines for this purpose. I personally prefer the dry-ish, sparkling and vivacious kind of white wines. Can't stand the syrupy, honey-like wines.

For recreational purposes I'd much rather drink champagne or cava than white wine. Or good ol' gin & tonic.

Wines are awesome, but if you really want to get into wines, you should rembember that the "educated" way of drinking wine is combining the perfect wine with the perfect dish...

YMMV.

There are some very nice white wines out there. However, to answer your question: white wines tend to be a little softer and with a little more fruit in the flavor. I suppose, given the traditional definitions, women's drinks have a more appealing taste, largely because men are supposed to drink things just this side of paint thinner. I don't agree with that, but that's another thread.

Nothing wrong with white wine.
Its Red wine I can't stand - 2 glasses and I have the mother of all headaches.
2 bottles of white(currently some cheap austrailian white from Tesco's) - no headache.

I think it's fine for guys to drink white wine. Most guys I know don't make an effort to drink wine, even appreciate the varietals and trying out different vintners. Wine coolers on the other hand...leave something less desirable to women if a guy happens to enjoy one.

my wife likes a good Reisling. fruity, more than even a sweet chardonnay.

If you order 'white wine please' in a pub or in places that doesn't serve good wine, I guess you might get some ribbing because you have no idea what the wine will be and typically only women who don't like beer will choose it in such a location. As such I think you only have these issues if you're drinking wine in heavily blue-collar surroundings.

Adjust your drink in accordance with your environment. If you're sitting in some low-rent Chinese restaurant and you're poring over the crappy wine list with the air of a connoisseur, well you kind of deserve to be mocked.

Drink whatever makes you happy, heck you are paying for it. I love wine and I have been drinking/collecting for the past 25 years.

The truth is that there is no right or wrong wine. Wine snobs may discuss the merits of a French Grand Cru but at the end of the day the decission will be based in what you like and your budget.

Cheers mate.

Neither drinking, smoking or swearing makes you a man.

Being able to drink what you want without worrying what people think is more likely to.

I usually drink orange juice and it does not matter what others think be they sober or not.

It's called peer pressure if you worry about things like this, just be the peer!

Steve

PS I also prefer milkshake over beer.

my family is french and i have never ever come across the idea of white wine being feminine, i have however seen abd heard wines such as calafornian shiraz and australian sauvingion being seen as "puny" and "inferiour"
femenine wines in france are appresiated as much as any other, and a femenine white can be quite delicious. (soft, demanding, and attention grabbing)

ok i shut up now.
