Basically I'm looking for another pair of phones that would have great SQ but also a very different sound signature so that I could choose depending on my moods and music genres. It could be phones that do great where the HD650's don't and vice-versa, for instance.

I was considering Beyer DT 880, Denon AH-D5000, Grado 325i... but I'm very open.

Thanks !

D5000 or grados would be a good startin point IMHO. W/ D5000 you'll have closed n an open pair. W/ Grados you'd have that on stage seat as WELL as the one a few rows back that you get with your senns. That's how i see it anyways... jus tmy $.02 =)

Bump, taking account of these.

I can second the Grado 325is. I went pretty much the opposite route, and I find them to make very good complementary cans. Often what one does poorly, the other makes up for.

Anyways, the HD650 is pretty unique. I honestly can't think of a non-Senn that sounds like it at the moment.

I agree with the HF2 recommendation. I'm a fan of both the 650s and now the HF2s, which I've been listening to near daily since CanJam. They would complement each other very well.

Looking back, I remember that RS1s or RS2s seemed to be the most commonly recommended complement to 650s. The HF2s seem to be a natural to take that place for this short period of time in which they're available.

I had the HD650, RS-1i and the 325is and feel the D5000 is so engaging that it is a true compliment to the HD650. That said the 325is was really fun (for short periods as it was fatiguing in comfort and sharp highs). If I had the cash to spare, I would but the 325is and HD650 again (in addition to me Denon's).

beyer 880/600 ohm "manufaktur", custom ordered and with a re-cable via Drew at moon-audio (the only U.S. authorized dealer for this). my senn reference is the 600, not the 650, but i have heard enuf 650s at meets.

No one has mentioned what I thought to be the HD650's chief competitor, with a very different sound signature, so it fits your bill: the AKG K 702. I have heard the AH-D5000 and own the AH-D2000, and I don't think they are as different from the HD650 as the AKG. I found the SR325 to be too bright and potentially fatiguing on audition, but I am growing to love my RS2i and they are not that much more money. So I would say the AKG K 702 and the Grado RS2i (or the HF2 if people think that is a preferable substitute -- I have not heard them). Then again, the DT880 will probably be my next purchase.
