5th Gen. Ipod (finally)

Oct 11, 2005 at 9:44 PM Post #16 of 260
Regardless of whether or not the 5g iPod is video compatible or not I will be purchasing one soon. I hope that the price will be somewhere around $350, that would be ideal. Even if this ipod cannot play videos speculation has shown that it will most likely be smaller than the current ipods and have a larger hard drive. Video would be a nice feature on the side, but really all I want is a portable, small, sleek, color-screened music player.

However, I am starting to become more confident in the speculation that this new ipod will not be supporting video because of how certain contracts need to be resolved regarding video liscensing and content.

I wonder if apple will release an ipod that is currently unable to play video, but in the future, once an upgraded firmware is installed will be capable. If so, apple may be able to provide video playback to whoever wants to install the firmware upgrade.

Regards,
Dan

My bet is on a minor update...
Smaller sized iPod, more storage, same price...
and maybe just maybe they'll add some wireless into the iPod...
but i truly doubt it, it seems as if Apple is focusing more on the smaller cpacity players (i.e Mini & Nano) so that they won't put too much effort into a new iPod... IMHO :-)

BTW, since i'm a jew I'll only know what's up with the iPod at Thursday :-) (Yom Kipur, though maybe with the time difference i'll be able to have a glimpse of the statement :-)

My thoughts:
-i think it's pretty obvious about 40/80 giggers. slightly thinner, same shape. Maybe a new color (offering the regular ipod in black?).

-NO video ipod. Maybe they'll release new software/firmware with video capability, or the new ipod (which will look almost exactly the same as the old ipod) will be able to play videos. Perhaps itunes with the ability to play videos also, or has quicktime built in. I don't understand the big fuss about the video ipod. I agree that people just don't care enough right now to take the ipod from an audio device to a video device. If they do (or when they do, eventually), I hope they introduce a new player that is mostly video, and leave the regular ipod as it is.

-maybe some improvements on the nano; fix the photo output, etc

Overall, nothing too exciting. Hope I'm wrong.

"Tomorrow, Apple is hosting a press conference in San Jose to announce another new product. Many analysts are expecting the company to introduce a video iPod or new iPod nanos in two additional colors."

I suspect the big news won't actually be the iPods, although the new generation will be released in something very close to the rumor sites' prognostications. The consensus among those seems to be pretty much as Taphil restated: smaller, more capacity, Nano colors, etc. In any case, certainly more evolutionary than revolutionary.

I think Apple is about to spring some major networking surprises along with (possibly) dual core G5s. Streaming video--if very well implemented--via an updated Airport Express would float my boat more than a modest incremental iPod update. But for us, of course, the big news is always the audio goodies.

Biggest hold out and most reliable rumor site comes around. There's a sign if ever.

Now the followup. Just music videos or full length movies (and if only the former a hack for the latter)?

Man, if the video iPod thing is true, I'll be one nervous duffer for the next few weeks. I just don't see a market for a video iPod, and I stand to lose big time if it flops.

actually thinksecret was wrong about the nano, so that is why I didn't believe anything about there no being video and I don't put to much into them saying there is video. Like they change there minds for ratings.

Hmmm... 80 gigs would be about right for holding most people's entire music collections in lossless format. Of course, we here at Head-Fi aren't "most people"

I would much rather see 80GB no video than 60GB video. I just want my whole music collection on my iPod. Come on 80GB!! We will know soon enough.
