Since I didn't do as extensive of a test with it, I can't pinpoint everything down as well. However, one thing I did notice a bit, is that the bass output seem to have a little less distortion and a little more refinement in it.

The difference in the line-out is less than the difference of the headphone output.

Sounds like Ipod 4G EQ is now actually useable. The most common complaint about was that the Bass Boost distorted. Maybe the normal bass was distorted anyway and the distortion just got more obvious with Bass Boost on.

*Sigh*.. I'm still thinking about it... but just look at how the platform bashing that's already started... it's got nothing to do with either Apple or Microsoft or Creative Labs or any other company's ethics... I just want to talk about how the players perform... and nothing more.

I mean, I hope it doesn't happen, but I'm fully expecting that 80% of the posts following a review posted here will not be about the iPod, it'll be about some tangential arguments, fanboy-ism bashing and such. I'm just tired of it... that's all.

I'm still going to take some pictures and update the review with them. Once that's done, I'll think about it some more.

Lindrone,
You always get worked up about the battles that rage here over which is best, etc propagated by iRiver fanboys, iPod fanboys, Ety fanboys, Shure fanboys, UE fanboys, etc. Chill out and let the misguided air their own opinions and ignore them if they get up your nose. Control of unreasonable posting is what the mods are for.

I'm interested, plenty of other people who're just reading this post instead of posting are interested and not fanboys.

I'm particularly intrigued due to austonia's post saying that the 4G was equal to the iHP-140 in terms of audio quality. While he has a definitive edge of DAP experience than both of us, I'm positive that we have a definitive edge in headphone/amp experience. So a comparison between the 3G and 4G would be very welcome.

as i said, i dont hate macs or have an inner longing to own one, but i am irked by fanboys because they praise a product simply because it is made by a certain company.

I agree completely, and if i said some things that contradicted my feelings, I apologize. I'll leave the thread alone now so that it may stay on topic and discuss sound quality.

as a mac fanboy i have to say that i have owned pcs since DOS 4.0 until XP .....

i switched from windows to os x in february and have never been happier.....

i do not know one person who has tried the switch from Windows and OS X and either regretted it or swtiched back

i do agree though that for video games it sucks...... if you have honestly evaluated both systems for long enough each there is no reason to prefer windows over os x....

the only reason windows beats os x is because not enough people have switched to os x to make many manufacturers of heavily speacialized software to support OS x

it is hundreds of times more seemless than windows...... in my experience, everyone who hates on macs has little to no experience using a mac much....... and when they do they have only used macs in school computer labs which are usually the worst maintained macs you can find.....

i have always posed this challenge which has yet to be met:

find someone who was an apple user since OS X that has used and Apple and switched to windows

your answer will be 0, zilch, napa, nobody

Regardless of the other issues, I found Lindrone's review very interesting.
I hadn't been too tempted by the 4G's until I read that the sound quality has been improved somewhat. Now I'm going to have to go and try one out when I get a chance, then I'll probably end up buying it, gggrrrrrr.

Nope, intlplby is right.

Seriously though, I can only speak from my experience. I switched to OSX about a year and a half ago for home use, and I'm perfectly happy. No crashes, no driver problems, etc.. all the stuff that I dealt with on Windows on a regular basis. And with the iPod and iTunes, I can't complain too much about my MP3 playing options. The only reason I would want a Windows based machine again for home use is to take advantage of some really nice players like the Karma and the Zen Extra, Dell DJ, IRiver IHP series (well you can use the IRiver on Mac, but can't use the database function).

I still use Windows at work everyday and now that XP has come along, there are alot fewer problems than there used to be in the Windows 98 days, but Windows still infuriates me from time to time.

The only thing that gets me about Mac is that, as was said before, not enough people have switched to os x to make many manufacturers of heavily speacialized software to support OS x, which is a shame..

Like I said, I use MacOS X at work daily... it infuriates me so much I'm begging the IT department to get me a XP machine. Guess what, I'm a graphic designer too! I rather deal with printshop's complaints than OS X's quirkiness.

Go figure...

Anyway... I'm trying to not make this thread into an OS war, but I couldn't resist on replying to that.. hahahaa..

good review, lindrone. i was thinking about picking up a 40 gig 3g ipod in the special deals section of the apple online store for $329...pretty good deal...but i do like the simplicity of the new click wheel (much more like the 2g ipod i have) and the improved battery life. i never use the remote and i don't use the included case, so not a big selling point for me there. but if the sound is indeed improved as you say in your review, then that settles it for me. education discount is $369, so only $40 more than the 3g...well worth it, imo.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I switched from 6 months of excruciating OSX use to XP Pro and couldn't be happier.
