...and I actually think most owners of Apple gear around here are grown ups, and not kids.

Anybody hear any news on this, other than what is posted in the apple forum?:

Very annoying, for now I have to use with screen never locked or else the dreaded ALAC skips. Apple, Apple, Apple, c'm'on! My first Apple product since the 80's...

BUT the sound quality (with lock disabled!) with the ALAC and Westone 3's is very, very good. P-51 on the way to get mo' better. Also the wonderful Pandora feature via WiFi makes the Touch more versatile musically than a Nano. With the higher setting for bitrate, it too sounds reasonably good. But the added diversity from a wifi-enabled music player is great when one needs to be enlightened to NEW music!

I called apple support the other day about this issue, and spoke to a product specialist (I think). I mentioned the thread in the apple discussions forum on the issue, and he looked it up and told me he was emailing the thread link to the "engineers" to let them know that there were customers interested in this issue. He said something to the effect that the engineers probably had it on their list, but had probably not gotten to it yet because they were also dealing with another issue (and I can't remember what he told me it was now). In any event, he gave me the impression that it would be helpful if others use the feedback link on the apple site, or call, to convey that lots of people are interested.

As to the slams of apple because this product has this slight deficiency, I think folks are overreacting and are a little impatient. These type of things routinely get fixed by updates, and I'm pretty confident this one will be fixed too. The world's not perfect, businesses have lots of customer-type issues to deal with, and the whole world does not revolve around "us."

Just register your concern and prod them to fix it, and soon the problem will be resolved by a software fix. The world will not come to an end.

I would agree with all of this if the issue had not been overlooked for 4 months. At this point I think we are closer to the next generation Touch than an actual fix. My patience ran out in November.

I have a feeling that Apple is more aggressive in the power management on the 2G Touch and the 4G nano to get better battery life. I have had skipped playback on MP3 tracks on my 4G nano. It only happened 2 times, and not reproducible, but it did happen.

May be true. But power is certainly not well managed when one needs to leave the screen on when playing music! I end up setting the screen brightness to minimum, in which case I can't see it outside even well enough to bring the brightness back up (!) in order to view options/ selections when changing/stopping songs. Hopefully this will get revisited soon.

Bugs like this are indeed annoying and I hate to say this but... I would expect that this particular one is very low on their priority list. It's probably just a small fraction of a percent of the total user base who feel it's necessary to use up the limited space available on a flash player with lossless files and the development staff is no doubt focusing on bigger fish. There may indeed be a conflict with the power management scheme that isn't so easy to fix, in which case you have a long wait ahead.

Unfair as it is your only real-world options are to:

1. Endure the skipping.
2. Encode to high-bitrate lossless and enjoy the player.
3. Sell it.

Yeah, typo, sorry.

And by 'sell it' I just meant get rid of it either by selling it, returning it, putting it in a blender, whatever. And I suppose option one could also have been 'Endure the skipping while bitching about it in emails to Apple and posts on the Internet', but I wanted to keep it short. My point was that Apple will never receive nearly as many complaints about this problem as any number of other requests and I doubt that you can raise it much on the priority list. So... just encode to a transparently-high lossy bitrate in the meantime and enjoy the unit..?
