NE5532s have an unfairly bad reputation around here (due mostly, I think, to the popularity of more expensive opamps with the DIY crowd). Implementation is (always) the key, and if the engineers know what they're doing, 5532s can be transparent. They are also ubiquitous in the consumer and pro audio space...chances are, most of the music in your CD collection has already been through a couple of 5532s in various mic preamps, mixing consoles, etc.
That said, I've never heard the 640c (or any Cambridge player for that matter). I have a CD5001 in right now that I like well enough to recommend. However, my favorite budget player is still the Sony SCD-CE595 ($150, and occasionally turns up refurbished for much less).

Pirce aside, the CD5001 is miles ahead right?
Miles? No. They're about the same, really, but the Marantz gives the vague impression of being slightly smoother, while the Sony comes across slightly more extended in the highs.
Of course, the Sony can play SACDs as well, for the dwindling numbers of us who still care.
