I've got a trusty pair of HD280s but I'm starting to crave more. Just curious what you all would recommend in the $180-240 price range. A pair of Grados? Some Beyerdynamics? More Senns? Don't really know the popular models now a days

Mostly will be used at my computer (Audigy 2-powered) for music and some gaming. As far as genre I've very diverse. Everything from Baroque and Classical to Country, Modern Rock, Punk, Prog, Folk, Classic Rock, Trance; if there is a beat I listen to it

I guess my priority then is a good range of sound and I generally perfer a very warm sound with good bass. Never really tried open headphones before but noise-leakage isn't really an issue in my environment.

From your Username alone, I have to say the Audio Technica A500 or A900


But if you want an all rounder can ( good for music and games), most will say hd580 with amp or 595.

I know if you want something straight up for music, reviews point to the Grado SR124

Also if you want to raise your bugdet to say a few more k's, you can always get the L3000, which will do everything and more

Its the SR125s, not the SR124s.

I would say skip the SR125s, since they are known to be bright, and they are not a good value, considering that the MS-1s (IMO) does almost everything better than them. YOu can always go up to SR225s too, and get a nice amp to go along with it, a great complement to Senns.

Grab a pair of DT770-80 used for around $150 (or new from a Guitar Center, if you can talk them down to it) and a pair of Grado SR60 for $70. You'll cover several bases nicely!

As far as gaming-wise will open headphones make a big difference in terms of directional sound and so forth?

haha.. I have similar situation as yours. 280 pro with couple IEMs.
After reading and researching in this forums and lots good suggestion.. I nailed down to two options within budget.

1) MS-1 $99(good value than grado) or maybe MS-2(the price is kind of high), without amp.

2) HD 580(<150) with amp(<100).

I pick 2) for more fun.. upgrading after another upgrading to see improvement.
