Nice to see long time members still around! Your wallet may hurt, but I'll bet you have had a great time trying out gear. This is definitely a hobby where it is very much about the journey.
15 years ago I had my first (sony) mp3 player. The network Walkman NW-E507. Had a very cool looking monochrome oled display in a mirrored finish that made it appear floating.
For today's standards (FLAC, HR-FLAC & DSD) seems small... at only 1GB (953MB after format). Back then I used mp3 at 192kbps CBR, with so, the thing held 120 songs. I had around 100 albums.
Now i have a wm1A with 128GB internal ... empty as my music is in two 1TB micro SD cards (953GB after formatting).. each card holds approx 30.000 tracks. Now I have 3400+ albums all lossless a mix of 16/24-bit FLAC between 44 1 and 352.8kHz as well as DSD from 2.8 to 11.2MHz
How did you early birds to this hobby run into such a niche area of the web? I ran into headfi later due to hype of a product, which isn't a surprise in audio.
Back then, if you invested in an expensive audiophile stereo rig, it should still sound awesome. I have an old DAC that I bought used. I think it’s from around 2001 and it sounds great.
If you have an old amp that’s well built with a good quality big power supply, it will also sound good no matter what decade you are in. Audio gear is kind of like musical instruments (in some ways) A good sound is a good sound whether it’s 1969 or 2069.
