Maybe that's true, but in order to have "anything that gets hot enough", you need an iron that maintains it's temp. If you take a cheap iron to a large ground plane it'll cool really fast and you'll lose the ability to make good connections, etc. You can't tell me that the bic and nail was as easy to use as a Hakko or Metcal, no matter how skilled you are.
