$1000 - electrostatic or dynamic?

From what I read, unless STAX voice their amps in a very particular way, I'm guessing it's the 303/404 that are peaky, not the amps. I've heard that there is not a big sonic difference between the 313 and the 006t for example with the lambda phones.

I honestly think this was done on purpose, but I'm not sure what that purpose was!

I think the lambdas were always peaky, and from numerous reports there seems to be little difference in the amps sound wise. However, it is a sound I and many others like. I can't imagine it was voiced that way on purpose but you never know.

Having heard all three briefly, I think K701 is the way to go for classical and jazz.

I agree with this comment, and disagree with the view others have put. I currently have Lamda Pro Sigs and Lambda Nova Sigs, with 3 energisers: SRM 3 (predecessor to 313, some say better) and SRMTS1 (predecessor to 006, again, some say better than) and SRDX Pro. To my ears, all 3 energisers sound remarkably similar. I wouldn't be able to detect which was which in a blind test, even the tube energiser from the solid states.

I love my 404/006 combo, warts and all.
I have used the basic 404/Lambda phones for long enough for them to colour
my experience and views of all other headphones.
But not in any evangelistic sense, I am just comfortable with them these
days and use them without being supercritical of their flaws.

Check this thread out for views and info the 404 frequency response as regards equalizing them.

Regarding the comments about a possible 880hz peak, as can be seen there is
a hump peaking around 1200-1500hz, and quite large bite out of the 4-5k range.

If your tastes run between the Stax and the Sennheisers, the Koss ESP/950 may be the right answer for you. At $599 stock from amazon it is within your price range. Tweaked out with a good power supply, you're looking to spend about $700 (with the stock amplifier). If you have a good preamp no further upgrades will be necessary. If you don't consider getting the Mcalisteraudio custom amp (costs $700).
