I watched till the end but didn't have the impression of characters lacking expression or badly designed, and actually thought the animation quality to be quite ok.
Things turned bad in the last ~3 episodes though, especially the story...

Oh...well, looks like I'm not watching it.
Which comes along with bad pacing, and every characters having no expression for about 80% of the time. Character design was clearly not one of their priorities in the show
