Let's bring some perspective here...

Any transformer based stat adaptor, including the WEE, will likely be designed to mate with an 8 ohm tap on the output of an amplifier.  The Lyr is not designed to drive 8 ohm loads, so I would not recommend it under any circumstances.

Well there you go.

Where's the initial impressions folks?

I expect an un-boxing photo essay, as well as (hopefully) some extremely positive HE-6 results toot de suite!

Well, it might do about 3 watts into 8 ohms.  I guess we'll have to wait to hear from Jason on this.

Interesting - I know a Travagans Red with 5 watts into 4 ohm can drive an SRD-7 pro transformer with Stax O2 Mk1 decently.

How do you come to that conclusion? Provided adequate current supply, the wattage should increase into lower resistance, not decrease.

We will need to hear from Jason, but by no means is your assumption a foregone conclusion.

My guess is that it would current limit at lower impedances.  Let's just wait for Jason.

Hey all,

Sorry to be scarce. We're getting ready to ship the last handful of pre-order Lyrs; pretty much everything has gone out to date. We're also ramping up for the next run, hopefully to deliver before the end of the month.

To answer a couple of questions.

First, electrostatics: I honestly have no idea. We've never tried it. Lyr doesn't have any electronic current-limiting, but the Dynamically Adaptive stage is designed to work optimally for typical headphone impedances. Sure, it will drive 8 ohms, but it is NOT a speaker amp. Speaker amps usually have some decoupling from heavy reactive loads, whereas Lyr doesn't need it for light headphone diaphragms. It also has self-resetting passive internal protection that will limit output at about 1A of current over long periods--so if you're going to try to drive speakers or 8 ohm transformers, you could potentially run into problems with back EMF and tripping the passive protection.

Second, payment options. Yeah, we can take PayPal, but it's a manual process, and it puts you outside our normal order tracking system. If you really, really want to use PayPal, let us know and we can send a request for payment.

So would it be likely to break anything if we try, or would it just not sound very good and/or trip the protection all the time?

You'll probably just run into the protection.

Received my Lyr today! Currently using it as a desktop preamp with Audioengine 5s and HRT Music Streamer II to burn in unit.   So far:  unit is extremely quiet; music sounds both muscular and delicate; very good sound staging; detailed, open but smooth.  More impressions later.  Pardon the ugly pics....

Mine was supposed to be here today (Saturday) but FedEx for whatever reason let it sit in California for awhile and they adjusted my delivery date to Tuesday.

Here's hoping good things come to those who wait

Jason, is there a timeframe on when the Lyr will be on sale through Amazon? I see the Asgard and Valhalla there, and it would help me IMMENSELY if I can buy it through Amazon.

I wasn't planning on getting them until April or a little later, so it's fine. Just as long as it shows up on Amazon within the next few months, I'll be quite a happy new Lyr owner.

I'm going to Megacon at the end of this month, which is why I can't afford to take a direct hit on my wallet atm. I have to recuperate. At least on Amazon, I have some breathing room with my Store Card.
