More precise than Graham Slee Solo (even with Solo's better PSU) and than Musical Fidelity Xcan 3 (even with MF's better PSU), and also than Grace design. GS Solo and Grace design have the same sound character (neutral), whereas MF has a slightly pleasant character which is preferable for harsh sources.
Comparison made listening to classical non-electronic music with Sennheiser HD600, HD800 and Grado SR225. Best match is HD600, both for the Headmaster and the Xcan 3, as HD800 seem emphasizing the higher frequences rather too much.
I wonder if modified Xcans sound better than the Headmaster. Please share your experience with the Xcan mods. I am not aware of any mods for Headmaster. Please share your information, if any.
One reservation: inputs 1 and 2 were somewhat noisy (electric hum), while 3 was quiet. Therefore only four stars for quality.
I own all the amps reviewed, except Grace design, which I auditioned vs. Headmaster, but returned to the dealer.
I have now come to audition another Headmaster at home. This one is modded, however I have no idea to what extent or by whom (neither has my dealer who sold it used). It compares very favorably to the stock. I am not in the position to open the box and to see inside. An important conclusion: either there are pronounced differences between particular pieces of Headmaster (inconsistency in product, bad quality control by manufacturer), or the product can be modded with definitely positive results.
