Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

Just wanted to post a quick follow up on my DVB #3 build.  I took the fiberglass out of the cups which sounded better to me but I was still hearing a very slight distortion.  I felt that the treble reflector might actually be vibrating since it is only held in place by 2 thin strips of tape.  I...

Just listened to some Fostex T50RPs today... WOW!

I had the same imbalance with mine, right louder than left.  Don't forget to seal off the open space around the cable jack in the cup.  It is suggested that you use silicon, I used newplast.   Phill

Just listened to some Fostex T50RPs today... WOW!

Cegli, thanks for the write up and motivation to remove the treble reflector.  After finishing my DVB #3 build the improvements over stock were obvious but still not to my total satisfaction so I removed the fiberglass, sounded better to my ears.  Although better, I noticed a very slight...

Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

Thanks Keith.  After looking at pictures of the backside of the baffle I don't think I put newplast in this area, especially since I followed DVB #3.   Phill

Thanks, but If I covered the baffle port with newplast I wont be able to locate it on the backside of the baffle, is it Ok to to push a sewing needle through the port from the ear side?  Thanks.   Phill

Quick question, when newplast is applied to the back of the baffle does this close off the baffle port.  If so, should the baffle port be opened from the ear side with something like a paper clip or a sewing needle.  Thanks.   Phill

A couple of photos to show where I added self adhesive felt just above the cotton.

Sorry I misunderstood about pictures, I'l take some pics of the felt and post them tomorrow.  Maybe BMF can shed some light on the exact thickness.   Phill

Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

The felt is standard adhesive felt from Michaels, it is actually pretty thin.  I hate to open the cans again because of stretching the 840 pads every time they are removed but let me see if I can take some pictures.  If I had it to do all over again I would have added the felt when I installed...

Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

I may have under estimated the improvements listed in my last post.  The sound is now electrostatic like, transparent and very refined, they now allow you to hear the beauty of the music which has eluded me from my two channel system which is not shabby and consists of of a tube pre and tube...

Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

A little follow up to my post when I finished my DVB #3 build.  After more listening I grew a little tired of the somewhat steely highs and attenuated bass so I decided to go back in for some exploratory surgery.  I decided to remove the fiberglass probably because it's the nastiest stuff that...

Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

Well I just finished off my DBV #3 build.  I used fiberglass and cotton instead of rockwool, I wasn't sure if the rockwool is supposed to be kept in a sliced portion sort like a slice of cheese or if it should be pulled apart.  The problem I had with the rockwool was trying to slice 2 pieces...

Looking for feedback on Micromega MyDAC: 24/192 Async USB $369

There are not many comments on this dac as of yet but I did find a thread at Audioasylum with some initial impressions. http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/digital/messages/16/165946.html

Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

Just received my T50rp's yesterday, they sound pretty good and I've begun collecting materials for modding.  The one thing I have been unable to find is the paxmate or acoustipack damping material without having to order it from the internet.  I was happy to find the Silverstone Acoustic Foam...

In response to the post using a wire tie to fix the stripped plastic piece I have used a piece of flat toothpick placed in the screw hole which works great unless all the threads are stripped.

Thanks so much, I'll get the T50RPs Tuesday and want to listen to them stock for a while to get a handle on their sound then will start to do your mods so I can hear the changes.

Hi BMF, thanks for the reply, I've been trying to read through some of the data you've compiled for the T50RP mods and I have to tell you I'm a little intimidated but at the same time very impressed with the work you've done.  I wish there was a simple tutorial laying out the steps with pictures...

Just listened to some Fostex T50RPs today... WOW!

Just ordered the T50RP today at a good price.  I have read conflicting thoughts on whether these are easy or hard to drive?  Now all I need is an amp, rated at 50 ohms I suppose a solid state amp is called for.  My question is what amps are you all using that allows the T50 to show what it can...

    Getting into Vinyl - Consultation

There are so many choices in tables new and used that it boils down to the best deal you can find.  I had both the the 640p and the MF VLPS, I liked the VLPS a tad better, a little more organic sounding plus you can the better power supply down the road.

    Small cd transport

After seeing The8thst recommend the Pioneer DVD V-7400 I found one on Ebay for $54.99 shipped.  It arrived today and I set it up in my system with the bifrost.  Gotta say so far with limited listening it improves on everything my previous Pioneer DVD 414 could do, the added information is...

    Realistic expectations vs Diminishing returns

Although rega is not my favorite in tables it is still a good table and you should be getting good sound out of it.  I have not tried it when I owned a rega P25 but it is said that a rega needs to be placed on a lightweight low mass table or stand.  Many rega owners recommend the...

    Thorens TD160 Super Heirloom Restoration

SSportclay, which upgrades have you made to the 1200 and which mods would you say have given the biggest improvement in SQ. The 160 has some very appealing qualities but is far from being where I want it to be, on the downside I'm hearing a bit of a hardness almost shrillness to the upper mids...

If I've learned anything after being involved in this hobby for as long as I have is that opinions can vary widely especially when comparing analog equipment. I have a 1200 MKII which is stock except for an upgraded headshell and just found a good deal on a clean Thorens TD-160. I have a Denon...
