FS: AudioQuest Yukon XLR interconnects, 1 Meter, Pair. Very good used condition, 1M pair measures 41" from tip to tip. About two years old. I've owned several AudioQuest interconnects and to me the Yukon line represents the sweet spot between performance and price. To my ears these are...

I’m selling my SMSL SU-9 DAC, which is a very nice implementation of the ESS 9038PRO chip. This DAC was reviewed favorably over at Audio Science Review and listed as a SINAD champ. Amir concluded his review by stating “Looks like we started a trend to achieve perfection in desktop DACs and the...

    SMSL D400EX & D400ES - Impressions Thread

It's interesting that with the ESS variant, the PCM filters now include an option for Filter Off as well as Low Dispersion. I wonder if Filter Off really means that no PCM filter is used? Also the remote functionality (on both variants) allows for the switching of either/both the single ended...

The Continuation Of The Sony Walkman 1Z/1A Thread!

Sorry, I was doing that from memory. It will actually say "USB AUDIO" in the upper left corner (see below). I tested a bunch of DACs and from what I can tell compatibility may be determined by the USB receiver chip used in the DAC. Many of the DACs that use off-the-shelf-receiver chips...

The Continuation Of The Sony Walkman 1Z/1A Thread!

Nope, no settings. In my experience the WMC-NWH10 cable is just not compatible with every DAC out there. You should power up the DAC and then turn on the WMIA and, if recognized, it will say "Digital" on the upper left of the 1A's screen. You might also verify that your WMC-NWH10 cable is...

    Musician Audio Pegasus R2R DAC

Does anyone know if Pegasus is compatible with Linux based digital audio players? My source is a Sony NW-WM1A with a Sony WMC-NWH10 high resolution USB adapter. It works properly with a few mid-fi USB DACs that I have tried but they have more traditional USB receiver chips. It did not work with...

The Continuation Of The Sony Walkman 1Z/1A Thread!

Does anyone know if the 1A/!Z (when used with the Sony WMC-NWH10 USB conversion cable) supplies the +5VDC necessary to trigger some USB receiver chips on external DACs? Thanks,

Yes, I agree. One way to possibly A/B the condition is to listen with the battery at 25% and then insert the Walkman's charger cable. You can alternate between the two quickly for testing purposes. It's best to have music with a lot of dynamics. It seems to be most noticeable at higher volume...

    OK thanks for testing this.

The Continuation Of The Sony Walkman 1Z/1A Thread!

I'm using the balanced output to drive a fully balanced (differential signaling) integrated amp. It's super quiet even with the 1A's relay disengaged.

Thanks. I only use low gain, but I suspect the maximum volume setting may be a factor. I'm trying to approximate the reference 2v line output level to drive an integrated amp to full volume. With the player's volume at 120, the signal is just shy of my CD players unbalanced line out level.

The Continuation Of The Sony Walkman 1Z/1A Thread!

Has anyone noticed a slight decrease in sound quality as the 1A/!Z's battery goes from 100% to something less than a full tank? The S-Master HX topology seems to use proper input regulation, but I notice a reduction in dynamics at around 2/3 battery life and a more general decrease in SQ at...

The Continuation Of The Sony Walkman 1Z/1A Thread!

Unlike Linux, Google requires Android developers to license and protect certain drivers and other key bits that result in most Android-based operating systems being locked. There are also differences in the distribution terms between the GPL and the LGPL.

Perhaps because Linux itself is open source and protected under a GPL? It would be different if someone hacked the proprietary OS of the ZX-507 and offered firmware upgrades to the masses.

    Sony Walkman custom firmware (non-Android)

I have a 1A and a ZX300 that are set up identically. Both now run Walkman One, E region, WMIZ external tuning, normal DAC initialization, no boost and direct source. With each new CFW generation, the ZX300 gets closer to the enjoyment level of the 1A. The most noticeable difference is having a...

Reply to review by 'matevana' on item 'Sony Walkman WM1A'

It depends on the application. I use my 1A as a source in a home audio system. The 4.4mm output feeds a truly balanced input on the amplifier (the amp is balanced input through output). The amps differential nature rejects anything common to both input signals and amplifies only differences...

Great Review! It should probably be mentioned that the 1A has no native line out functionality, so it isn't possible to drive an external amplifier without essentially double amping. In practice though, a suitable 2v (SE) or 4v (Bal) signal can be approximated by using the player's volume...

    Sony NW-ZX300

With the latest firmware (Midnight v2) the ZX300 punches so far above its weight class its a bit ridiculous. I also own a 1A and a feel that the improvement on the ZX300 is even more striking. The ZX300 isn't the most resolving player, so it really seems to benefit from a firmware based on the...
