    If you are willing to mod your headphones a pretty popular mod for Beyerdynamic cans is to do a detachable cable mod. While I haven't done it, it doesn't seem too hard if you're willing to solder. Not to mention that Beyerdynamic makes some really tough headphones.

    No guarantees but more then likely yes. Not to mention the stack holds its value very well you can buy it used for around ~180 and then resell it for around that price so all you'd really be out is shipping if it doesn't work out for you.

    It really depends on what you have it plugged into. However I would hazard a guess that even a cheaper amp like the schiit magni would be able to make them sound even better. Since you have been able to get your hands on a really good pair of headphones I would do yourself a favor and not wonder...

    Well the HD600's aren't closed backs they are open but, AKG does seem to make some closed backs if that is what you're interested in.

    I didn't like the dt990 either. Instead I picked up a fostex T50rp. I really like it I have modded it a fair amount and would recommend at least changing out the ear pads at a minimum. Also If you could increase your budget I would try to swing for some hd600 series cans. They can be found used...
