    The Reference 6J5 Thread (L63, 6C5, 12J5, 6P5, etc.)

My 3 latest pairs and very likely the last tubes that I will be purchasing for a good while. Being away from my gear for so long has caused me to completely lose my internal refrence on tube sound vs solid state so I have no idea when I will actually get around to reviewing these. National...

Would love to get some audio impressions of those tubes. I have not tried any European tubes in this family yet. Most of them are too expensive for me to justify, but I have always been curious on how they stack up to American tubes.

For me personally I have found that I don't need to AB tubes. If I need to AB tubes to hear a difference between them, then they are likely similar enough where it really wouldn't matter too much because I either like its character or I dont. But most of the times tubes are chocolate and...

Alright here we go. I am about to use my words to describe sounds. Strap yourselves in folks this is a longer one. We are covering 11 pairs of tubes here in hopefully as much detail as any of you could ever want. Testing: PC-> USB -> Monolith THX 788 DAC+AMP (Dual AKM 4493) -> RCA Preout ->...

More tubes incoming. I'm going to be away for a couple of weeks for work so I wont be able to post impressions of any of these tubes until I get back. Expect part 3 to drop close to the end of the month. You can also catch a sneak peak of some of them over in the 6J5 thread.

    The Reference 6J5 Thread (L63, 6C5, 12J5, 6P5, etc.)

I have a few pairs of 76 tubes like my Arcturus (National Union) 76 tubes that have close to solid state levels of noisefloor. And the trend is that they are on average the quietest type of tube that I have. And I have like 4-6 pairs. This is before I further ground things out and sheild the...

    The Reference 6J5 Thread (L63, 6C5, 12J5, 6P5, etc.)

I was mainly referring to the ones that could be thrown into a 6J5 system. With a plate triode and all the bits that you would see in an audio tube. I could assume just by looking at many of the noval ones and even the 6SN7 style ones that they had no amplification ability like an audio tube but...

Alright, I figure I might be the one to introduce these tubes to this thread as well as share some words of advice before you all go out and snatch up every last one of these. These are know as 'Magic Eye' tubes. And some of them share the same electrical characteristics (or close enough) as...

    The Reference 6J5 Thread (L63, 6C5, 12J5, 6P5, etc.)

Vali likely wont be able to do any tube other than a 6V, and most amps using tubes like these are using them as preamp tubes and don't have nearly enough current to drive two 1A+ tubes. Most people running anything like the aforementioned usually require external power supplies to handle all the...

    The Reference 6J5 Thread (L63, 6C5, 12J5, 6P5, etc.)

I think the biggest hurdle in including them is going to be the electrical requirements to run them. Considering this is somewhat of a tube rolling thread, it is going to be hard getting any representation for them because you cant just adapt into a 6SN7 socket. Likewise, I wouldn't lot in 56...

    Project Ember Tube Rolling

@Mshenay You seem to have dealt with a lot of audio gear. What makes you stick with the Ember over the other tube gear you have tried? A lot of people seem not to like tube hybrids or plate starved designs, and instead tend to gravitate towards OTC or OTL stuff. Does the Ember compete with...

@VRacer-111 come share over on the Ember Tube Rolling thread. It seems like this thread is kinda dead in comparison. Even the tube rolling thread is very quiet but it seems like it is a bit more active than over here.

Just a heads up. There is a very new and very alive (at the time of posting) 6J5 thread here. I just stumbled upon it and figured I would share considering Embers relationship with the 6J5. That being said most of the guys over there seem to be coming from the other end of the tube audio...

Hi yall, I'm coming over from the Project Ember Tube Rolling thread. Ember is a 48V plate starved tube hybrid so it is a bit of a different beast in terms of how it is dealing with its tubes. I have been rolling a lot of 6J5 and 76 series tubes recently and have been enjoying some of them a...

That is the thing about high end audio. Especially headphones. There the price to performance goes out the window to some extent after $500-1000 depending on who you ask and subjectivity starts playing a much greater factor. I recently demoed my brothers pair of ATH-M40X's and was thoroughly...

What would you say the defining characteristics of those tubes were that you were going for? I have a GE 3 mica 5 star 6201 12at7 coming in along with an Amperex holland 6DJ8. I wanted to try a couple more novals before I opt for another buying round of 6SN7 equivalents. I've been wanting to...

Ironically the cups are made by a luxury auto bamboo interior company because of their knowledge of bamboo workmanship. The grainyness of the wood is actually intentional to give it a more 'woodlike' texture. The name of the person on the tag is Denons chief audio engineer (or something...

or: How I learned to stop worrying and love the tube Soooo. Recently I have been really getting into tube sound with these cans. I have been going after warm euphonic tubes. From what I have read, seems like that these are on a different level of headphone than the 5200's. 5200's are relatively neutral though not really colored from what people say. I would say if you want clean articulate bass that is not the focus of the music 9200's are the way to go. A search in...

PART 2 Dual Triodes: Testing methodology and everything else was laid out in part 1. Just to clarify as well. Above average noisefloor means it is nosier than what my brain defines as 'average tube noisefloor'. Below average means it is quieter. Super arbitrary system but it is only for...

I'll have to try those out if I can find a pair. I also want to try another pair of Hytron 6C5's because they seemed to have a lot of potential. All digital. Only one pot and it is definetly digital. It is an infinetly spinning stepped knob. On my sensitive headphones I can even hear almost inaudibly quiet pops when adjusting volume sometimes. Not sure the methodology they are using though
