Feedback by 'ponyhead' on listing 'Onkyo A800'

Nice guy, all-around pleasant to business with, item in excellent condition as advertised.

    Obscure Chinese DAPs

Update: I got the Acmee MF-01 a couple years ago, but it has sat in a drawer until recently, when I noticed that this year, a firmware was finally released that could read directories. No longer must one put all their songs into the root directory! There is still a fair amount of scrolling to do...

iBasso SR1 semi open Headphone. Limited production.

From what I remember, I perceived a problem with the timbre, which I noticed right away with a piano piece. But no mod necessary because lucky for me, that's where my a800 comes in. The two pairs complement each other perfectly - the a800's weakness is rock (at least compared to the SR1), but...

iBasso SR1 semi open Headphone. Limited production.

Any of you fans of Queens of the Stone Age? Is there a headphone in existence that does "First It Giveth" better than the SR1? My god...freaking perfect! I still can't pinpoint it, but there's something unique and downright magical about the SR1 when it comes to rock and some electronica...

SASH Deux & Tres; impressive planars from Ukraine

Glad you like them so far, arielext! No surprise that you like the open-back config. I haven't listened to much music lately, but the last few times I did, I came to the conclusion that genre-wise, the Tres is my most versatile open-back. They have an extra knack for Rock, but are also good at...

According to my cheap postal scale, about 515g

SASH Deux & Tres; impressive planars from Ukraine

Realizing my logic error from my last post, I switched the cables back to normal (since other songs wouldn't necessarily pan that low frequency to the same ear). I did a lot of listening on the Tres the past couple days and haven't heard the vibration in any other song. Then I returned to the...

SASH Deux & Tres; impressive planars from Ukraine

Thanks both. The rattle was only in the right cup, so just now I tried reversing the L/R cables, and after doing so, the rattle is gone! My guess is I knocked something loose in the right cup, and that the song pans the resonant frequency mostly to one ear, so switching L/R moved the frequency...

SASH Deux & Tres; impressive planars from Ukraine

Can one of you try the Gorillaz song "Last Living Souls" on the Tres? There's a frequency in the song that, on my unit, resonates with something in the headphone, causing a rattling sound. Fortunately, the rattling is rare, therefore not a big deal. That's the only song that brought it to my...

iBasso SR1 semi open Headphone. Limited production.

After more time with the SR1, my opinion of it remains the same! The music has body and it's like everything is in focus. Perhaps I even prefer semi-open to fully open; trying the SR2 may answer that. Having tested the SR1 against my hd6xx, I plan to sell the 6xx. My Sash planar, on the other...

The Hyland Headphones Saturn One, Saturn Two and Jupiter One thread

How similar or different is the Saturn Two from grados / alessandros? It's not a grado driver, right? I seem to like warm tunings as well as Harman curve, am not a fan of the grado sound, but am a fan of the hd6xx and fidelio x2. By Hyland's description of the S2, it should be up my alley, but...

    Philips Fidelio X3

A literally flat FR on headphones would sound wildly off (probably downright awful) and nothing close to studio-like nor perceived neutrality. It seems more often than not, "neutral" means something different to the person saying it than the people they're saying it to, so I just avoid the word...

Kaldas Research RR 1 Conquest ($500 Electrostatic)

How ethereal are these? How does the timbre compare to a dynamic such as the hd650?

Is this upcoming iBasso SR2 launching?

I wonder how the SR1 can be made any better! I suppose full open-back is more likely to help than hurt. I'm not Tyatya, but having followed the rr1 thread I can answer that: it doesn't come with an energizer.

USB Audio Player PRO (UAPP): 24- and 32-bit playback, ubiquitous USB audio support for Android

When using a dac dongle and only playing 16/44.1 files, is there an audio advantage of UAPP compared to say, VLC? Is the signal less altered on its route from the phone to the dac? TIA

    Onkyo A800 and H900M full-size headphones - shipping March 2016

Ah found it, nice review. I'm more familiar with raw graphs, but if the compensation is similar to Tyll's, I suppose the a800 is already pretty close to Harman? The spike at 9.5k could probably be tamed a little. Or in log scale maybe that's 9.2k

    Onkyo A800 and H900M full-size headphones - shipping March 2016

No, but possibly fatiguing. I have yet to give it an hours-long listening session. There is a small treble peak somewhere that I'd reduce, but the main reason I mention EQ is that I'm starting to question the overall balance. I didn't question it until yesterday, when I finally heard a...

    Onkyo A800 and H900M full-size headphones - shipping March 2016

I have both. I say a800 unless you're sensitive to treble. It's not harsh, but it's not rolled off like the 6xx. As of today I do suspect the a800 could use some EQ, but that may be all it needs to be a truly elite headphone.

iBasso SR1 semi open Headphone. Limited production.

I just got these used in great condition with the pt-1 pads already on them. I haven't tried the stock pads yet. All I can say is WOW! Before today, I was certifiably bonkers for my onkyo a800, even going as far as to call it a fractionally-priced Focal Clear. So of course the first thing I...

Ohh right, I don't think I can do that either, but I forget if it was only because of the cord included (which might be the charge-only variety).

    Obscure Chinese DAPs

Anyone have suggestions for cheap daps with a digital-out? SQ unimportant since I'd only use it with a dac. (This in case I decide not to use my phone for this purpose.) I have a 64gb card that my mf-01 reads fine. I formatted to FAT32 using the "guiformat" uitlity (whose back-end is the utility...

    Philips Fidelio X3

@Pharmaboy I do think you're in the minority in this regard, but you're exactly right that it doesn't matter, because there's no right/wrong when it comes to subjective taste. Anyway, my takeaway from today is that the x3 will probably sound different from both, but perhaps closer to the x2...

    Philips Fidelio X3

I've found my opposite :D I had the x2hr for about 3 weeks, loved it, then bought the a800 and thought it curb-stomped the x2 in an A/B test, so I returned the x2. The a800 is clearer and tuned more neutrally, lacking the x2's recessed mids without sacrificing elsewhere. More soundstage too, if...

    Philips Fidelio X3

Philips replied to my email. Apparently the email didn't go to the appropriate department, but to Warranty Services, so they don't know the answer. They did say: But this specific question might not be answered in the product info.

    Philips Fidelio X3

Dang...well for all I know, a re-tuning of the x2's driver might be a night-and-day transformation, but I'm skeptical and this gives me pause. I was prepared to order the x3 the day it's released, but if it's the same driver then I'd need glowing impressions first. Maybe I can find out by...
