I used to own all Kanns and now have Ultra. Of course it all depend on the DAC filter used, cable and your headphone, but to be honest Max was on par with Ultra. If I was given a choice I would probably keep Max as it had great synergy with my gear.

To me, Kann Max is the answer, unless you can get Kann Cube at the right price. I had all Kanns A&K released and I'm sure you would be happy with either. Both detailed with wide soundstage with highly analytical sound. You can use DAP built-in DAC filters and cable types to tweak the sound...

Hi, DAC filters will change your sound signature, apodizing is objectively just bad, other filters can be justified depending on your headphones' synergy. Few examples: you can make your sound a bit warmer by choosing hybrid or improve soundstage by selecting fast roll-off, minimum phase.
